The Director, Development & Donor Services (DDDS) leads, directs and coordinates all AARP and AARP Foundation development and donor services functions.  This includes: development business processes, systems, system processes and system integration, gift processing and administration, acknowledgements, development system vendor management, strategies and activities that enable the AARP Foundation to support its charitable programs and AARP to support its advocacy, public policy, education and outreach programs as well as other priorities. The DDDS supports the Chief Development Officer (CDO) through planning, implementing, and creating strategic direction for how systems, gift processing and donor care services support the fundraising process and help the team reach its fundraising targets. The DDDS supervises the systems, gift processing and donor services teams, and reports directly to the CDO and serves on the Development leadership team.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Defines leads development systems, processes and donor care strategies.  Specifically leads and directs all development system needs, business processes, gift processing, acknowledgements and donor services functions for charitable (AARP Foundation) and AARP programs, as appropriate. Ensures these functions meet performance and efficiency goals, supporting the overall growth of development strategies while increasing efficiencies over time.
  • With, and as part of a team, leads development and donor service strategies that support direct response, planned and major gifts, institutional support and major gifts strategies. This includes national, regional and local efforts on behalf of all donors and donor types.
  • Leads all integration strategies, system needs and process changes that support cross-functional needs and efforts (e.g., direct response, major gifts strategies, corporate support)
  • Develops effective development and donor care services that support efforts to generate support to Impact Programs, Government-funded programs, Litigation, and AARP’s programs (as determined by AARP Foundation’s President). Uses creative and flexible approaches to funding these programs at the national, regional, state and local levels. Works closely with the CDO, Program leads and staff to understand program objectives.  Design and implement engaging effective fundraising strategies.
  • Works in partnership with the CDO, President of AARP Foundation, and appropriate AARP leaders to create and implement sound development and donor services efforts that beneficially advance common goals and strategic priorities. Communicates and collaborates across all departments to build integration that help to meet both focused and broad program support goals of AARP and AARP Foundation.
  • Represents the development team’s business needs and helps inform those who lead cross-enterprise initiatives related to systems and processes that impact development efforts.  
  • Leads the gifts administration and acknowledgement process for gifts to all AARP and AARP Foundation.
  • Manages the relationship with appropriate agencies and vendors who support development and donor services efforts, including all outsourced services and program managers (e.g., Merkle)
  • Supervises and oversees the work of development and donor services. Supervises systems, gift processing/acknowledgement and donor care staff and personnel.
  • Promotes cost efficiencies in all fundraising efforts. In concert with development managers, evaluates current and proposed programs and recommends actions to modify fundraising approaches to ensure success.
  • Develop unit’s annual operations budget and work with the rest of the Development leads to incorporate the costs into appropriate annual budgets. Oversee costs and manage expenditures.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable laws and follows ethical standards for charitable giving as defined by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) and National Association of Charitable Gift Planners (CGP). Leads development and donor services programs with integrity.
  • Understands, promotes, and demonstrates attributes in the Foundation’s principles and core values.
Educational Background: 
Completion of a Bachelor’s degree is required
Skills/Experience: 
  • 7+ years of successful fundraising system and support experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience related to the duties of the position:
  • Demonstrated success in system analysis, integration and working with vendors to deliver effective development programs.
  • Demonstrated in depth knowledge of the development process: identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, acknowledgement and stewardship.   Ability to deliver systems and business processes that help ensure fundraising success and efficiencies.
  • Leadership and strategic qualities to develop and manage staff and to direct day-to-day activities and operations;
  • Experience developing solid working relationships with contractors and vendors that help meet program needs.
  • Good understanding of the rules and regulations regarding 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) fundraising programs and operations;
  • A record of success in organizing and implementing development systems and processes that effectively support a robust and aggressive fundraising effort.
  • Strong, effective communications skills that effectively communicate how systems and processes will meet development and donor needs.
