Responsible for supporting partnership outreach communications and coordinating on-the-ground campaign outreach for the various Act Against AIDS campaigns: Let’s Stop HIV Together, Doing It, HIV Treatment Works, and Start Talking. Stop HIV and other projects within the department. The Outreach Specialist will assist with the Community Event and Partnership tasks through:  implementing event outreach strategies, travel to an event city, meeting with local partners, providing attendees with technical HIV prevention information, and conducting other tasks as appropriate. The Outreach Specialist will focus on developing and delivering clear, concise and coordinated messaging across multiple communications vehicles and on fostering opportunities for dialogue between campaign team, client team, and partners.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Writes a broad range of communications (event plans, reports, social media content and one pagers) that promote campaign activities as related to community events and partnerships
  • Provides promotional support for Pride events and community outreach activities
  • Develops and implements social media communication content and strategies to promote and publicize community events and partnership activities
  • Provides consultative review and editing to communications to ensure accuracy and clarity of message and tone
  • Applies understanding of HIV prevention field and campaign goals to improve communications relevance to target audience
  • Coordinates logistics on the ground: communicates effectively with partners to ensure that everyone knows their roles and responsibilities during events; works with event staff to set up booth, materials, and activities; conducts outreach with partners to gather data on campaign reach (materials distributed, number of booth attendees, number referred to testing, etc.)
  • Serve as a point of contact and represent campaign in interactions with audience and client
  • Staff booth and engage event participants in scheduled activities (taking photos, participating via social media, interacting with celebrity guests)
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in one of the following: Public Health, Marketing, Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or related field required
Skills/Experience: 
  • Two to five years relevant work experience in a position that requires the knowledge and application of health communication strategies and methods
  • Previous experience in the field of HIV prevention preferred.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish a plus.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and accurately about the campaign, HIV prevention, testing, and treatment in both English and Spanish if bilingual.
  • Demonstrated skills in creative and strategic thinking and ability to communicate orally in a succinct, clear and persuasive manner.
  • Experience with health, education and environmental issues a plus.
  • Previous experience doing event outreach a plus
  • Superior organizational skills and acute attention to detail
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and e-mail.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member, prioritize and competently manage a variety of activities with multiple deadlines; motivation and willingness to take initiative and full responsibility for selected activities.
  • Ability to travel for events, including travel during weekends.
