Communications Specialist--Save the Children Action Network

The Communications Specialist will implement communications strategies and external media relations for Save the Children Action Network (SCAN), a 501(c)(4) organization and the advocacy arm of Save the Children. External communications efforts will serve as an integral component of SCAN’s domestic policy agendas around increasing access to high-quality early childhood education as well as international policy agendas related to well-being of kids globally. The Specialist will assist the Communications Advisor and Senior Director, Political & Public Affairs and follow their direction in ensuring that key audiences and stakeholders - such as media personnel, coalition partners, policymakers, and the general public - are appropriately identified and effectively communicated with. The position will have regular contact with media outlets across all mediums at the national, regional, and local levels and play a critical role in monitoring and tracking SCAN’s communications outputs. The Specialist may serve as a spokesperson for SCAN, as appropriate.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Assist Communications Advisor with implementation of external communications strategies for SCAN’s various advocacy and electoral campaigns. (10%)
  • Serve as primary writer and content developer for external and internal SCAN materials including press releases, op-eds, briefing materials, talking points, letters to editors, etc. (30%)
  • Lead SCAN’s day-to-day media operations including booking interviews for staff and surrogates, press release distribution and follow-up, media monitoring, list management, etc. (30%)
  • Monitor, catalogue and report on SCAN communications outputs and benchmarks, including earned media hits, media cultivation, coalition and partner alignment and certain types of digital engagement. (15%)
  • Interact with relevant SCAN campaign staff and Save the Children personnel to ensure SCAN communications team is adequately briefed and capable of carrying out its mission in support of external advocacy efforts. (15%)
Educational Background: 
High School or Technical/Vocational Degree
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum 3-5 years' experience in area of expertise 
  • Professional experience with electoral or public policy advocacy campaigns
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Ability to organize and execute tasks for several campaigns simultaneously 
  • Pro-active, energetic, patient, detail-oriented, and manages deadlines 
  • An ability to work effectively and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders 
  • An ability and eagerness to engage across the political spectrum and to champion the organization’s bipartisan approach to effective policymaking

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree 
  • Experience interacting with media outlets and personnel
