The Communications Specialist is a critical member of the Knowledge Leadership and Learning (KLL) team responsible for supporting key communications functions of the team, and contributing to the development, writing and editing of key informational products for internal and external dissemination. He/she supports production of informational products, which requires managing and supporting regular communications with the country/regional teams—tracking and responding to requests while being proactive in creating and generating human interest stories and other means to regularly share information on A&T programs in addition to country/region requests. Working with the Associate Director, Communications, the Communications Specialist’s primary responsibilities will include but not be limited to posting content to A&T’s principal communications platforms, including the website and social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube), and supporting the development of a variety of content, from long-form technical reports to brochures, one-page project summaries to pull-up banners. As a member of the KLL team, the Communications Specialist will also be expected to contribute to the development of communications strategies to provide information to various strategic audiences. The Communications Specialist is a dynamic team member, able to quickly move from one task to another and manage multiple work streams; contribute content ideas that are audience appropriate; coordinate tasks with other members of the KLL team and outside contractors and partners; and, as necessary, edit for style and copy edit documents and other texts and edit graphics.   

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Manage the development and posting of content to A&T communications platforms including but not limited to the A&T website and social media accounts
  • Coordinate the production of various communications materials (banners, printed documents, posters, etc.)
  • Write and edit documents and other communications as necessary and assigned
  • Format documents using Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat
  • Design and/or edit graphic designs using Illustrator and/or Photoshop
  • Understand and apply branding rules as indicated in the A&T branding guidelines
  • Monitor and update a communications tracker and inform KLL team members of the status of multiple offices communications activities and of their needs at any given time
  • Support the work of graphic designers, writers, editors, and social media managers who work with A&T directly and indirectly
  • Generate analytical reports regarding the performance of A&T’s website and social media platforms, and identify opportunities to increase reach and engagement as well as threats and weaknesses
  • Organize and conduct meetings to share information regarding A&T’s activities to internal stakeholders
  • Learn about new ideas in communications and where appropriate implement “best practices” gleaned from other projects and activities
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in communications or related field, or equivalent
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant communications experience required, preferably related to nutrition and/or development in low- and middle- income countries.
  • Superlative writing and editing skills
  • Excellent website and social media content development skills; familiarity with WordPress CMS is essential
  • Proficiency with Sharepoint, Adobe Creative Cloud, and Microsoft Office software
  • Familiarity with basic graphic design concepts
  • Proficiency in English required, French desirable
  • Able to learn and adapt to new assignments quickly
  • Experience organizing and managing image libraries
  • Demonstrated ability to create compelling and organized narratives, stories and other materials for various audiences
  • Strong organizational and management skills
  • Experience and knowledge of best communication practice
  • Ability to work independently and on a team, and manage and support multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to influence, motivate, negotiate, and work well with others
  • Understanding of nutrition and/or public health programming in low- and middle-income countries
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills
