Full-time

FHI 360 is a nonprofit human development organization dedicated to improving lives in lasting ways by advancing integrated, locally driven solutions. Our staff includes experts in health, education, nutrition, environment, economic development, civil society, gender, youth, research and technology — creating a unique mix of capabilities to address today's interrelated development challenges. FHI 360 serves more than 70 countries and all U.S. states and territories. We are currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of:  Communications Manager.

The Communications Manager will serve as the communications task lead for SMC’s Diabetes Education and Marketing Support (DEMS) contract with CDC’s Division of Diabetes Translation (DDT). The primary goals for DEMS are to increase referrals and enrollment to diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES) services, to increase the impact of interventions to prevent type 2 diabetes, and to decrease health inequity in the incidence of type 2 diabetes and diabetes complications. For more information, visit www.cdc.gov/diabetes/ndep.

The Communications Manager will lead various communication, marketing, and community engagement/mobilization strategies and tactics, including the development of a new brand for DSMES services, tailoring existing communication resources to be more behaviorally focused, and leading webinars. The Communications Manager will also support partner engagement efforts, reporting to the Project Director. This team member will play a key role in developing science-based, tested, and culturally-appropriate tools and resources that empower CDC/DDT partners to effectively address diabetes prevention and management, especially in underserved populations.

The ideal candidate is a self-starter who is able to quickly get up to speed on new topic areas and issues. In addition to DEMS, the Communication Program Manager will support other health communication projects, as assigned.

Areas of Responsibility:
  • Oversee communication efforts including development of communication and marketing plans to connect with target audiences through traditional and digital communication channels.
  • Lead the development of content for print and digital communication materials, videos, toolkits, educational guides, learning aids, podcasts, interactive micro-learning sessions, webinars and infographics. Provide overall quality control for all products.
  • Lead the development of a new brand for Diabetes Self-Management and Education Programs (clarifying audiences, creating a cohesive set of messages and calls to action, and a united look and feel).
  • Collaborate with team members to identify client needs and generate innovative ideas to engage key audiences.
  • Provides technical input into translating research into persuasive communication products.
  • Manage digital communication channels including websites and social media channels.
  • Ensures timely implementation and monitors project activities against work plans.
  • Coordinate with graphic designers, subcontractors, researchers, other team members and partners, and clients to establish workflows and timelines.
  • Contributes actively to business development efforts.
Educational Background:
Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English, Communications or related field
Skills/Experience:
  • Five or more years' experience with strategic communication, health communication, marketing, public relations, advertising, promotion, research, or other communications methods. Experience working in diabetes and/or with vulnerable populations a plus. Master's degree preferred.
  • Experience with supporting communication projects for U.S. Government clients or health related non-profit organizations. Past experience working on communication projects for CDC a major plus.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of health communication and/or social marketing principles.
  • Demonstrated experience in translating public health science into persuasive copy for consumers and professionals.
  • Demonstrated writing and editing experience.
  • Strong program/project management skills.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to solve problems quickly and creatively.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, prioritize, and competently manage a variety of activities with multiple deadlines.
