The Advisor of Communications will develop, execute and implement communications strategies for Save the Children Action Network (SCAN), a 501(c)(4) organization and the advocacy arm of Save the Children. External communications efforts will serve as an integral component of SCAN’s domestic policy agendas around increasing access to high-quality early childhood education as well as international policy agendas related to well-being of kids globally. The Advisor of Communications will sit on SCAN’s Senior Management Team, which helps shape overall campaign strategy for the organization. The position will coordinate online public affairs engagement with SCAN’s Digital Team and will also liaise with leadership from Save the Children’s Marketing, Communications and Fundraising Division to safeguard the overall Save the Children brand. The Advisor of Communications will serve as the day-to-day spokesperson for SCAN.
- Work closely with the Senior Director, Political & Public Affairs to develop and implement external communications strategies for SCAN’s various advocacy and electoral campaigns, including the effective utilization of senior leadership. Oversee message and material development for SCAN, its advocacy campaigns, and internal communications. Identify audiences, create tailored messaging, and determine the most effective method(s) for delivery. (30%)
- Serve as day-to-day spokesperson for SCAN, engaging in high-level national and regional press cultivation of relevant outlets, reporters and analysts across all media formats. (30%)
- Coordinate with SCAN Digital Team to ensure organization’s external communications priorities are being effectively communicated through online platforms. (15%)
- In collaboration with Senior Director, Political & Public Affairs, oversee and direct day-to-day work of SCAN Communications staff and consultants. Collaborate with external partners and coalitions on media and communications efforts. (10%)
- Liaise with Save the Children’s Marketing, Communications and Fundraising Division to ensure coordination of and internal communications efforts. Work closely with the Director of Media & Communications, U.S. Programs & Advocacy, to maximize our brand’s domestic-facing communications efforts. (10%)
- Support Senior Director, Political & Public affairs with decisions related to political strategy, polling and related research, and related advertising campaigns. (5%)
- Minimum 7-10 years' experience in media and communications
- On-the-record press experience
- Ability to organize and manage several campaigns simultaneously
- Strong planning skills, including the development of ambitious communications plans for campaigns
- Excellent writing skills
- Pro-active, energetic, patient, detail-oriented, and manages deadlines independently
- An ability to work effectively and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders
- An ability and eagerness to engage across the political spectrum and to champion the organization’s bipartisan approach to effective policymaking
- Willingness to innovate and take risks
- An understanding and appreciation of direct federal and state lobbying
- An understanding and appreciation of grassroots advocacy

- Experience leading external communications campaigns for political candidates and/or advocacy organizations
