Communication Specialist I - Neglected Tropical Diseases

Work within the Communications team to support the day-to-day communication activities, including research for communications initiatives, support creating communications content, and picking up any aspects of neglected tropical disease (NTD)-related communications activity, as requested. We are looking for someone with an interest in NTDs and/or related work experience. The ideal candidate is a hard working individual with good organizational skills who is able to meet reactive workloads and daily and weekly deadlines. S/he is a keen learner who is excited about being involved in all aspects of communications, from the research phase through to developing content.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Developing communications materials to support NTD initiatives, including formatting, layout, and development of graphical elements.
  • Conducting research to support developing communications activity and social media outreach.
  • Tracking and reporting on results of communications activity.
  • Setting up and minuting key meetings.
  • Performing various administrative duties connected to NTDs communications
  • Working with and following up on progress with internal teams/partners or external agencies
  • Building good working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Researching, writing, and editing a broad range of communications that promote the activities of the organization.
  • Helping to publicize and promote special events and outreach activities.
  • Assists with preparing a variety of promotional and informational materials including articles, bulletins, websites, pamphlets and other related materials.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervision Given/Received:

  • Has no supervisory responsibility.
  • Receives instructions on new assignments.
  • Reports to the Senior Communication and Knowledge Management Specialist.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's Degree or its International Equivalent • English, Journalism, Public Relations or Related Field.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Knowledge of principles, theories and methods of communications, public relations, and journalism.
  • Strong understanding of company policies and communications.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and creative skills.
  • Ability to work based on deadlines and write effectively for the appropriate audience.
  • Strong digital and content development skills and the ability to be creative across a range of platforms.
  • The ability to use his/her own initiative and to work independently.
  • Experience developing publications and communications materials, including using image editing tools (Adobe Creative Suite)
  • An interest in NTDs and public health is desirable.
  • 2-5 years of publications and communication experience (design/layout, writing/editing, content development/promotion).
  • Articulate, professional and able to communicate in a clear, positive manner with clients and staff.
  • Must be able to read, write and speak fluent English.
  • Prior experience in a non-governmental organization (NGO).
  • Prior experience working on USAID-funded programs (desirable).
