Though contested by other departments, the EA team is clearly the best at PSI. EA is known as the innovation lab, a place where exciting new ideas in global health are tested. Currently, we have programs operating in Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Somaliland, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda.

We are looking for an Associate Program Manager (APM) to help us provide strategic support to PSI’s global malaria programs.  The APM should be passionate about contributing to the health of those we serve around the world, love numbers and working with data, like the challenge of linking programs with finances, and have a curiosity for why things are the way they are and confidence to ask how we can do better.  

The APM will have wide‑ranging responsibilities working with PSI staff at all levels both in Washington and overseas, providing program management and technical support to the Malaria Department’s portfolio of global projects. The APM will serve as the key liaison between the country teams and PSI global services, serving as a champion for the field. The APM is responsible for managing project data collection, analysis and reporting; coordinating donor reporting and ensuring contractual compliance; and engaging with country teams around strategy and sustainability issues. The APM will pro-actively meet programmatic and administrative needs, juggle multiple competing priorities, and enthusiastically ensure smooth and timely flow of work.  The position requires flexibility, strong organizational skills and a willingness to assume varied duties and projects.  This position is based in Washington, D.C. and reports to Program Manager for East Africa.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The APM is responsible for supporting PSI’s Malaria Team, reporting to the team’s Program Manager.  Responsibilities include:

  • Manage all centrally funded projects assigned to the role. Provide proactive, strategic, and detail-oriented program management support to the country teams. Serve as the primary liaison to the donor for financial and contractual issues. Monitor adherence to donor and internal policies and procedures. Develop and track budgets, develops monthly burn rates and ensure that project deliverables are high-quality and timely;
  • Assist in the review of contractual documents and/or program budgets across Malaria’s centrally funded projects;
  • Provide financial management support including review of invoices, and donor reports in coordination with the Program Manager and Financial Analyst;
  • Support new business development by reviewing and editing proposals and workplans, and preparing project budgets, in coordination with Technical Advisors, Regional Support Teams and in-country teams;
  • Assist with review and payment of invoices, drafting of consultant contracts;
  • Assist with the development of Annual Operating Budgets;
  • Respond to internal and external requests, and direct to team members as appropriate;
  • Support onboarding of new staff and train all team members in PSI processes and procedures. Connect team members to resources in headquarters and at the country level;
  • Leads the logistics organization of Malaria meetings as needed;
  • Supervise and direct workflow of Malaria Program Associate; and
  • Fulfill other programmatic and administrative functions as required.
Educational Background: 
Master’s degree in a relevant subject (Public Health, International Development.) or equivalent experience.

The basics

  • You have at least three years relevant work experience, including experience in program and financial management.
  • You are passionate about working on international health and private sector issues and are willing to work hard to make a difference in the lives of those we serve.
  • Developing country work experience required. Two years of prior work experience in a developing country preferred.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment, and strong analytical/problem solving capabilities;
  • Knowledge of USAID and the international donor community required, USAID contract experience is a plus.
  • You have advanced skills in Excel, word processing, budget management and data analysis.
  • You can effortlessly perform a variety of tasks on short notice within designated deadlines and keep cool under pressure.
  • A keen sense of urgency and strong work ethic, positive mindset, and comfort with the ambiguity and pace of a dynamic and bureaucratic environment
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively across departments
  • You can impress us with your attention to detail and timeliness.
  • You are fluent in English. Verbal and written skills in French a major plus.
  • Ability and willingness to travel
