The Associate Director, Communications is a leader on the Knowledge Leadership and Learning (KLL) team responsible for managing/overseeing key communications functions of the team, and developing, writing and editing key informational products for internal and external dissemination. He/she will be responsible for KLL’s role in all formal donor reports in coordination with other A&T teams. Production of informational products will require managing and supporting regular communications with the country/regional teams—tracking and responding to requests while being proactive in creating and generating human interest stories and other means to regularly share information on A&T programs in addition to country/region requests. The Associate Director, Communications will manage and support the KLL Knowledge Management Specialist responsible for the website, social media strategy, and other dissemination mechanisms as well as internal communication channels for learning and cross-project sharing. He/she will ensure that creative informational materials are of high quality and consistently available to update the website and to share externally. The Associate Director, Communications will work closely with the KLL director to ensure the effective management of the team and the high quality of all products. The Associate Director, Communications will act on the Director’s behalf as needed.   

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Lead KLL internal processes for reporting, and for KLL role in formal donor reporting
  • Oversee and manage on-going, regular production of high quality informational products for dissemination through the website and other mechanisms
  • Take lead in developing, writing and editing a consistent stream of stories, articles, and other means to share A&T’s activities and successes with external audiences
  • Travel as necessary to document on-the-ground programs
  • Lead processes for on-going support to the countries and regions in the production of informational materials per their requests
  • Manage the KM Specialist and ensure that A&T KM functions are state-of-the-art and effectively implemented
  • Provide additional writing and editing support as needed
  • Coordinate with A&T’s administration and finance to track and manage all KLL procurements—consultants, sub-contracts
  • Act on the KLL Director’s behalf as needed
Educational Background: 
Masters degree in communications or related field, or equivalent
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum 15 years of relevant experience required, related to nutrition in low- and middle- income countries communications strongly preferred.

Specific Knowledge Requirements:

  • Superlative writing and editing skills
  • Demonstrated ability to create compelling and organized narratives, stories and other materials for a wide variety of audiences
  • Strong organizational and management skills
  • Experience and knowledge of best communication practice
  • Understanding and experience with state-of-the-art knowledge management approaches
  • Ability to work independently and on a team, and manage and provide oversight on multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to influence, motivate, negotiate, and work well with others
  • Understanding of nutrition and/or public health programming in low- and middle-income countries
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills

Skills:  

  • Proficiency in English required, French desirable
  • Excellent writing and editing and organizational skills

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Will supervise one full-time KLL Knowledge Management Specialist and part-time consultants 

Travel Requirements

  • Travel required –  15%
