The Education Policy and Data Center is a research and data analysis unit of FHI 360.  EPDC holds a portfolio of standalone research and data analytic projects, as well as data analysis and research functions in support of Global Education projects.  As part of the Research & Evaluation Team, EPDC research associates provide extensive design and data analysis support to FHI 360 Global Education projects on a range of activities in research, monitoring and evaluation. In addition, EPDC maintains a comprehensive online database of education data, and an extensive set of data resources and research publications, including papers in peer-reviewed publications. As part of the R&E Division, EPDC advances the FHI 360 Global Education research agenda and common frameworks for continuous learning across projects, and facilitates knowledge sharing across project teams. 

As a co-leading organization of the Education Equity Research Initiative, FHI 360 is committed to building data and evidence on education equity through its projects, its research studies, and through linkages with partner organizations. Areas of Responsibility: 

The Research Associate will work within the Research and Evaluation team, including the Education Policy and Data Center to support research and data management in the following ways.

Support a variety of data analytic tasks across EPDC and Research & Evaluation activities in Global Education, including the following:

  • Data cleaning and documentation development;
  • Power analysis, research design and methodology development;
  • Dataset construction for research and evaluation projects, including both secondary sources and primary data;
  • Development of questionnaires and data collection tools for research and M&E;
  • Programming of data collection tools and data quality control;
  • Data analysis, including both descriptive and inferential analysis, following established protocols and in collaboration with other R&E staff;
  • Contributing to the development of proposals in research and evaluation.

Ensure a continuous and comprehensive support, development, and expansion of the EPDC online resource, including its database and other resources.

  • Ensure timely updates to EPDC database from common sources, and investigate new or non-traditional sources of education data.
  • Lead social media effort, including developing blogs on website resources and managing social media accounts, emphasizing data visualization and usability of the database.
  • Perform administrative functions in support of EPDC and R&E team, as assigned.

Facilitate knowledge sharing and learning, communicating regularly on results and activities in assigned projects and fostering evidence building on common issues across projects.

  • Develop or support the development of research reports, policy briefs, brochures, presentations, and other materials designed to improve learning and dissemination from R&E activities and projects;
  • Present research at conferences and other venues, showcasing FHI 360 research;
  • Facilitate knowledge sharing within Global Education and its field teams.
Educational Background: 
Bachelors Degree Required and Master’s degree preferred in one of the following or related fields: Education Planning, Education Policy, Education Research, Education Theory, International Education, Economics of Education or equivalent combination
Skills/Experience: 
  • Typically requires 3-5 years of experience in international education, including at least 3 years working on research and data analysis in education;
  • Familiarity with technology use in research & evaluation, including ODK and other survey technology;
  • Experience designing and implementing research activities in education, including primary data collection;
  • Background or interest in using new data sources for communications and data visualization efforts. 
  • Data management and website management skills;
  • Quantitative research skills and a high level of proficiency in Stata required, other software a plus;
  • Strong writing skills in English required, including an ability to write clearly and concisely on short deadlines; speaking and writing skills in French and/or Spanish desirable;
  • Experience in project management and analysis in support of large donor-funded field research or M&E activities.
