Working with a dynamic and collaborative team, the Gift Officer will support the growth and health of National Geographic Society’s integrated midlevel giving program in support of overall institutional revenue objectives. Incumbent is responsible for supporting and implementing the stewardship and solicitation strategy for donors giving between $1,000 and $100,000, and creating a cultivation and donor engagement plan for these donors.
- Working in concert with other giving, research, events, and communication teams within the organization, and with an understanding of data and analytics resources within the industry, move a portfolio of 400-700 donors and prospects through quality, strategic contacts and personal individual engagement points to identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors, further bond them to the organization, our mission and programs, and upgrade their giving over time. Within portfolio management, Gift Officers are expected to dedicate 50% of their time providing personal stewardship to donors with a heavy focus on qualified, ongoing, value-adding personal interaction within the framework of the full donor giving continuum. - Gift Officers are expected to dedicate 30% of their time to managing the automated aspects of midlevel donor solicitation, acknowledgment, engagement strategy, and benefits fulfillment. Work with the direct response and major gifts fundraising teams to appropriately integrate campaigns, version for a midlevel audience, create and implement upgrade and standalone campaign strategies, and manage the overall midlevel donor experience. Adapt written materials as needed, including briefings, solicitations, and acknowledgements, in a quality consistent with National Geographic standards. Responsible for budget projections, as well as creating and coordinating strategies to meet or exceed fundraising goals and other measures of success. Expected to be the team "expert" on midlevel giving donors, treatment, and support infrastructure. (30%)
- Develop and maintain a thorough and accurate understanding of National Geographic programs and funding priorities in order to further engage donors and prospects with Nat Geo content, programs, and engagement opportunities. Possess the ability to effectively communicate those priorities in writing and in conversation to a wide variety of people and successfully match donor's interests to content and programmatic priorities. - Utilize and update the donor database by recording activities, contacts, and strategies on an ongoing basis consistent with department requirements. (5%)
Minimum Years and Type of Experience
- 3+ years of fundraising experience with donor and donor program management and gift solicitation, including a proven track record of personally soliciting and stewarding donors.
Knowledge and Skills Required
- Sophisticated communication skills and demonstrated ability to elevate donors to increase giving, and to identify and upgrade new midlevel giving donors. Success managing a blended donor treatment strategy in a fast-paced and changing environment. Successful candidates should be professional, self-motivated and capable of working proactively and independently. Candidates should have a proven track record of building and managing meaningful relationships with donors that result in philanthropic gifts ranging from $1,000 - $100,000. Successful experience working collaboratively with colleagues across multiple diverse teams, and committed to driving activity that achieves or exceeds individual and team goals. Must be energetic, self-directed and able to work confidently and successfully in a fast-paced development operation. Candidates should be politically astute, dynamic people driven by a sense of urgency towards inspiring donors and meeting program budgets and goals. Solid working knowledge of Raiser's Edge (or similar) database.
