The Director for Education in Emergencies will manage Save the Children’s Education in Emergencies work. The EiE program is comprised of awards from both USG and private donors, implemented in 15-20 countries, and includes thought leadership activities within Save the Children and external Education in Emergencies forums. S/he will provide direction to the program and will manage the award portfolio, ensuring compliance and successful program delivery. S/he will maintain key relationships within Save the Children and with the Advisor for Education in Emergencies will represent Save the Children US to external audiences. Along with the Advisor for Education in Emergencies and other team members supporting the EiE portfolio, s/he will provide direct technical support to projects and lead fundraising efforts; as needed, s/he will deploy as part of a humanitarian team. S/he will support the Senior Director for Basic Education with the overall management of the BE team.
Program Leadership and Direction (25%)
- Provide leadership to the Education in Emergencies program, using expert technical knowledge and understanding of the competitive marketplace to
- Establish the technical vision for the program based on market research, identifying areas of focus for SCUS within the US market and vis-à-vis other members of Save the Children;
- Translate the vision into a strategic and operational plan, including technical products, key partnerships and collaborations, fundraising, and program delivery.
- Lead the Education in Emergencies response for large-scale Category 1/2 humanitarian responses, determining the EiE strategy, representing the Education in DHR coordination forums, leading fundraising efforts with public and private donors, and deploying as needed.
- Represent Save the Children in Washington DC-based technical working groups.
- Represent the EiE program to internal audiences, including the Department of Humanitarian Response, Public Policy and Advocacy, Child Protection, and SCI’s Education Global Theme.
- Advise the Senior Director, Basic Education, and the Associate Vice President, DECP, on Education in Emergencies issues.
Program Delivery (40%)
- Oversee the implementation of the EiE strategic plan; lead Education in Emergencies annual planning and quarterly reporting processes for the Department of Education and Child Protection.
- Provide technical assistance to ensure excellence in all areas of the Education in Emergencies portfolio, applying state of the art technical approaches with education leaders within Save the Children offices and UN, government and other civil society members.
- Oversee program management; including complex USG awards, working closely with award managers to ensure compliance and successful delivery of all activities.
- Maintain up-to-date information on all aspects of the EiE portfolio and provided highest quality communications materials for use by senior Save the Children leadership.
Fundraising (25%)
- Oversee fundraising for the Education in Emergencies program, including US government, private and global accounts (UNHCR, Dubai Cares, etc.).
- Serve as the Proposal Director for strategic, high-value Education in Emergencies opportunities.
- Position Save the Children as a partner of choice with potential donors and partners.
Staff supervision and support (10%)
- Lead a team of directly reporting Education in Emergencies staff (one Advisor, currently) as well as other team members who provide support to the EiE portfolio.
- Provide operational support to the Humanitarian Surge Team personnel (HSTs), and technical backstopping to EiE HSTs.
- 7 to 10+ years of experience including experience in the emergencies sector, including early-onset humanitarian response;
- Proven technical knowledge in education;
- Ability to travel internationally up to 40% of time, including ability to deploy for large-scale emergencies within 72 hours of a request as part of the humanitarian response team;
- Strong management skills, including the ability to set and execute work plans and manage budgets;
- Proven experience successfully leading proposal processes and raising funds from both public and private donors
- Demonstrated ability to work within a team setting from a technical, management, and interpersonal perspective;
- Ability to problem-solve, take decisions in a timely manner, multi-task, determine priorities, take initiative, and work independently;
- Experience with proposal development for donors, including leadership of USAID technical design and writing processes;
- Strong interpersonal, oral and especially written communication skills, including cross-cultural communication skills and strong public speaking skills and experience;
- Recognized leadership in the education in emergencies sector and the ability to effectively represent organizational priorities and interests.
