Coordinator, Philanthropic Partnerships

Reporting directly to the Vice President, Philanthropic Partnerships, the Coordinator is an integral member of the Philanthropic Partnerships team, serving as one of the primary points of contact for donors, NGS staff, and NGP staff interfacing with our group. The Coordinator, Philanthropic Partnerships provides technical and administrative support to five units of the Philanthropic Partnerships Department, including: Major gifts, Foundations, Planned Giving, Donor Research, and the Campaign. The Coordinator provides overall support to these teams and serves as the linchpin and a primary internal and external point of contact for Philanthropic Partnerships group at National Geographic.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Provides support for the Vice President, Philanthropic Partnerships (and the broader team as necessary) for donor cultivation and stewardship; database maintenance and entry; and general administration. Specific tasks may include:

Donor Cultivation and Stewardship (35%):

  • Liaising with NGS program staff;
  • Drafting letters for executives to donors, writing summaries of projects, proofreading, photo research, and assistance with layout and design; and
  • Arranging donor visits to NGS headquarters.

Database Coordination (35%)

  • Tracking all Philanthropic Partnerships’ team activity in Raiser’s Edge database for accuracy and completion;
  • Entering data on prospects, donors, meeting notes, and reports into Raiser’s Edge;
  • Monitoring internal and external deadlines related to our individual and foundation donors regarding necessary reports and deliverables; and
  • Liaising as necessary with the development staff who manage the gift processing and acknowledgment process.

Administrative Support (25%):   

  • Compiling and distributing executive briefing materials ahead of donor and prospect meetings;
  • Assisting in the scheduling of internal and external meetings for the Vice President;
  • Booking travel and shipping materials to donors and prospects;
  • Completing travel and expense reports;
  • Managing ingoing/outgoing correspondence to donors; and
  • Producing initial drafts about NG programs appropriate for use with donors.

Other duties as assigned (5%)

Skills/Experience: 

Minimum Education Required

Bachelor’s degree preferred.

 

Minimum Years and Type of Experience

2+ years professional work experience preferred; past Development experience preferred. Customer service, direct marketing and development experience preferred.

 

Knowledge and skills required

  • Must be detail and deadline oriented. Must have superior organizational and multitasking skills. The ability to work in a fast-paced environment is required. Strong oral and written communication skills are necessary with a demonstrated ability to write effectively for business/philanthropic communication purposes. Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and work with minimum of instruction and supervision when necessary. Proactive with the ability to anticipate required action. Must have excellent interpersonal skills enabling professional and congenial interactions. Ability to handle sensitive information and work as part of a team with all levels of staff and external audiences including Board Members and top donors. Occasional domestic travel is possible.
  • Professional demeanor when interacting with and NGS staff, senior executives, high net worth individuals, and donors, including an older population. Previous experience with a development database such as Raiser’s Edge strongly preferred. A commitment to National Geographic Society’s mission and institutional values is required.
