Associate VP, Gender Equality and Girls Empowerment

The Associate Vice President, Gender Equality & Girls Empowerment is responsible for setting Save the Children’s course for its renewed commitment to Gender Equality and Girls Empowerment.

The incumbent will play the leadership role on the Agency’s Gender Equality and Girls Empowerment agenda, helping to shape our research and knowledge based on a broader understanding of the field that crosses sectors; and will be a visible representative of that work. She/he will identify, cultivate and expand Save the Children’s key relationships with relation to Gender Equality and Girls Empowerment. These include relationships across Save the Children US and the Save the Children movement, relationships with other key implementation and advocacy partners, and relationships with donors.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Be external facing, working with Resource Development to develop and implement a fundraising strategy, for funding a Center for Girls; and provide input to proposals for gendered programming. Collaborate with Board members and senior leaders to develop and implement the SCUS strategy for Gender Equality and Girls Empowerment; mobilize/lead a newly formed women’s council. (35%)
  • Work across the Agency with International Programs, US Programs, Advocacy, and SCAN connecting the dots on what is already going on and providing leadership to ensure development, implementation, and embedding of appropriate accountability systems for Gender Equality. Lead dedicated Gender Equality staff (eventually 3-4 additional FT staff in a Center for Girls – dependent on fundraising), and provide guidance to staff embedded on the business teams. (35%)
  • Work with Human Resources and Office of the President to ensure that SCUS adopts and embeds a Gender Equality Policy drawing on experiences of sister agencies; develop and implement a strategy for socializing the Policy across the organization, including providing input to our Gender Equality Training. (20%)
  • Work across the movement as a lead on the Gender Working Group, and represent SCUS’s Gender Equality strategic interests across the Movement. (10%)
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's Degree required; Relevant Advanced Degree highly desirable.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum of 15+ years of experience and proven results in international & domestic development or relevant corporate / foundation experience; experience in gender equality leadership programming and fundraising highly preferred
  • Demonstrated capability to develop and lead strategic efforts, with proven track record on gender mainstreaming highly preferred
  • Demonstrated capability for external representation/thought leadership and a “known voice” on these issues
  • Technical and/ or Managerial knowledge, skills, and experience to manage the operational activities of the global coordination function for gender equality; willing and able to provide technical advice, guidance and management related to teams across the agency.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and presenting proposals for philanthropic support
  • Proven staff management skills and experience; proven project management skills and experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Experience with matrix management for international change and influence; ability to operate independently, as a leader and manager, and as a team member
  • Enthusiastic and infectious approach to challenges
