Public support of NPR and NPR stations is the foundation of public radio. NPR is looking for a story teller and a strategist who’s always looking for the next creative way to activate listener support of stations, programs, podcasts. The Assistant Producer, Programming Fundraising assists in producing fundraising material for use by stations and NPR on broadcast and digital platforms. Works collaboratively with other NPR producers and stations to advance best practices, and insure NPR’s material aligns with, and supports station fundraising trends and needs.

The successful candidate will be a creative, collaborative producer who can successfully initiate content and strategies based on the news cycle and how NPR fits into listener’s lives. A significant understanding of NPR’s mission and familiarity with its programming and stations are strongly preferred. We’re looking for a clear strategic thinker who can engage with program producers and stations, frame a fundraising opportunity, and create audio and digital assets to activate listeners around that opportunity. We’re seeking someone who is imaginative and experienced with audio production, writing, and social media.

The Assistant Producer, Programming Fundraising assists hosts, producers, and department heads in Programming. Participates in research meetings and actively follows public media and general fundraising trends. Content for digital media is an integral part of NPR's product, and employee will be expected to contribute audio and digital material. Edits audio.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Creates Fundraising Material.
    • Builds complete fundraising segments and programs by editing, scripting and linking two or more related pieces, music and other elements.
    • Collaborates on building complete packages of fundraising material by editing, scripting, and thematically linking program elements.
    • Generates montages and other creative audio soundscapes based on ideas expressed in NPR programs, podcasts, and other program elements.
    • Generates social media posts, emails, newsletter copy, and announcer copy based on ideas expressed in NPR programs, podcasts, and other program elements.
    • Works with hosts, producers, and others in arranging for related elements to complete or supplement other fundraising material.
    • Plans remote production and goes on location with producers and hosts and prepares material for air.
  • Edits audio and copy.
    • Edits program segments and fundraising scripts.
    • Prepares scripts and other on and off-air materials as required.
  • Generates segment and strategy ideas.
    • Maintains active relationships with NPR stations and program producers.
    • Proposes new strategic and creative approaches to fundraising.
    • Actively consumes public media on a variety of platforms for inspiration.
  • Maintains relationships with stations, fundraising leaders, and key stakeholders at NPR.
    • Actively reads and follows fundraising forums and newsletters.
    • Actively participate in public media fundraising discussions, and encouraged feedback on NPR’s work.
    • Advocates for listener focused approaches to fundraising on all platforms based on informed conversations about best practice.
  • Bargaining unit employees may be given assignments on different platforms, such as multimedia production, including producing Web text, interactive material and multimedia content.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
Skills/Experience: 

Required:

  • At least 1.5 years’ experience in fundraising.
  • At least 1.5 years’ experience in broadcasting.
  • Ability to edit audio.
  • At least 1.5 years’ journalism and/or communications related research, with ability to collect, organize and disseminate information proactively.
  • Thorough knowledge of social media.
  • Demonstrated writing ability.
  • Demonstrated ability to work quickly and efficiently under deadline pressure. Ability to handle more than one assignment at a time; ability to prioritize, anticipate and communicate effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team.
  • Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system.
  • Ability and willingness to relocate. In the future, NPR may choose to transfer employees to other geographic locations. Severance provisions of the AFTRA collective bargaining agreement will apply should you choose not to accept a transfer.

Preferred:

  • Experience in public radio fundraising and/or producing pledge drives.
  • Digital media skills, including proficiency in social media as an engagement and community building approach.
  • Experience producing in and operating digital audio self-op facilities.
