The News Literacy Project (NLP), a national, nonpartisan education nonprofit, is seeking a Director of Corporate Partnerships to join our development team. Founded in 2008, NLP is the leading provider of news literacy education for middle and high school students, primarily through its signature e-learning platform, Checkology®.

NLP is poised for a greater national presence to meet the intense interest in its programs from school districts across the country while it works to build a national movement to advance the practice of news literacy in all sectors of American society. To reach our objectives, NLP is rapidly expanding its capacity. This position will help develop and launch NLP’s inaugural corporate giving program. This position reports to the Senior Director of Institutional Giving.
About the position
This is a new position for the organization. The Director of Corporate Partnerships will oversee all aspects of a corporate fundraising program, providing much needed frontline fundraising capacity to ensure ambitious goals are met during a time of organizational growth. The organization’s budget has grown from $1.8 million in 2018 to $5.7 million this year. You will be an integral team member supporting the organization’s ambitious goal of raising $35 million over the next four years.
The Director of Corporate Partnerships will work closely with the Senior Director of Institutional Giving, the Senior Director of Development, and across departments (e.g., with members of the marketing and professional learning teams). You will build on NLP’s corporate giving and engagement strategy and lead the operationalization of strategic plans, including pipeline development, collateral creation and closing major corporate gifts. You will leverage existing relationships, and be creative about developing new relationships, to seek opportunities for corporate funding, sponsorships, in-kind giving and partnerships with companies interested in joining the movement to fight mis- and disinformation. This position will have direct contact with donors and prospective donors and will have access to a significant amount of confidential information.
To excel in this role, you will have a track record of successfully:
- Creating and implementing a corporate partnership plan that increased funding as well as grew and diversified the organization’s funding base.
- Maximizing opportunities to network and build relationships and partnerships with companies that are mission-aligned.
- Building strong relationships across verticals and with executive management to support collaboration and ensure consistent, accurate information exchange between internal teams.
- Cultivating a positive and collaborative team environment.
Specifically, in this job, you will:
Develop and implement a robust corporate fundraising strategy
- Help develop a robust corporate partnership model that includes corporate foundation grants, sponsorship opportunities, in-kind gifts and fee-for-services (learning opportunities for corporate employees).
- Oversee the creation, evaluation, and tracking of NLP’s corporate partnership objectives, key results, and action plans.
- Coordinate closely with internal teams to develop a comprehensive approach to maximizing corporate support and engagement.
Build and manage the corporate prospect/donor pipeline
- Help build a pipeline of new major corporate funders through identification and qualification of prospects, networking and devising creative strategies to leverage NLP’s brand.
- Maintain, steward and grow this pipeline of corporate prospects, creating research profiles and meeting briefings to support outreach, develop materials for pitches, and create touch points for engagement.
Lead corporate fundraising
- Lead corporate fundraising efforts, including effective and meaningful engagement opportunities that will ultimately help fuel corporate revenue.
- Leverage annual and special events to raise the organization’s brand, visibility and engagement with potential corporate partners/prospects.
- Prepare letters of inquiry to potential funding and collaborating sources.
- Manage and expand corporate sponsorship and in-kind giving.
- Streamline work and information flow across the development team and the organization to coordinate new partnership opportunities.
- Utilize EveryAction and other resources to coordinate and track corporate engagement strategies, record activities, and maintain updated prospect and funder information.
This position is virtual; ideally, the successful candidate will live within an hour of a major airport or metropolitan area. We have an office in Washington, D.C. and for candidates local to the area you have the option to work from the office.

In addition to the qualifications noted above, the successful candidate will have all or most of the following:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent certification.
- A minimum of eight years of experience in fundraising for six- and seven-figure gifts, with significant time in a corporate partnership/fundraising role; ed tech or non-profit start-up experience a plus.
- Demonstrated experience with leading, creating and managing marketing collateral communicating partnership/sponsorship alignment with programs and mission impact.
- Understanding of, and ability to talk about, the dangers that mis- and disinformation pose to our democracy.
- Ability to manage ambiguity in a growing organization, while helping the organization build and maintain structures for consistency.
- Strong verbal communication skills and experience with public speaking.
- Excellent writing and editing skills.
- Knowledge of broad fundraising techniques.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Highly organized multi-tasker.
- Willing to travel approximately up to 30% of the time.
- Experience with entire suite of MS.
- Experience and advanced proficiency with CRMs; EveryAction experience a plus.

The salary for this role starts at $85,000. NLP also offers outstanding benefits, including bonus, health and dental insurance, a 401(k)-plan match and more.
