ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND

One Common Unity (OCU) is a non-profit organization based in Washington, DC, which began in 2000. For 18 years OCU has successfully created spaces to transform the lives of youth and families. Through arts-based peace education in schools, summer youth initiatives and filmmaking, we have reached over 21,500 youth and families with our work. OCU teaches people how to create media, arts, and music that reflect the stories of those working diligently to create communities which honor and respect one another and understand our inherent equality and interdependence. OCU believes violence is a learned behavior, and therefore, if someone can be taught violence, they can also be taught compassion, cooperation, and the skills necessary to create healthy and mutually beneficial relationships.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Development Manager is a key member of the OCU team. Reporting to and in partnership with the Executive Director and the Managing Director, the Development Manager works in close collaboration with OCU senior leadership to provide supervisory support to the development team. They are responsible for planning, organizing, and managing all of OCU’s fundraising activities. Specific areas of responsibility include: grant research, proposal writing, and reporting requirements, donor relations including the identification, cultivation and solicitation of major donors, planning and coordinating fundraising special events, and development focused communications.

This is a full-time exempt position, based in Washington DC.

Areas of Responsibility: 

RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Fund and Business Development

  • Works in collaboration with the Executive Director and the Managing Director to develop and carry out an annual fundraising and development plan to support the strategic direction and annual budget of the organization.
  • Monitors and evaluates all fundraising and business development activities and manages timelines to ensure the fundraising goals are being achieved.
  • Implements the fundraising plan and develops policies and procedures for the development team in accordance with ethical fundraising principles and in alignment with OCU values.
  • Continually assesses OCU’s program offerings and relevance to new and emerging funding opportunities and directs fundraising efforts towards those ends.  
  • Researches funding and creative revenue-generation opportunities and serves as the focal person for the development of proposals for prospective clients and donor cultivation. Works alongside and supervises OCU’s grant team to prepare and submit grant applications.
  • Oversees the planning and execution of special fundraising events in collaboration with other OCU team members.
  • Identifies and develops corporate, community, and individual prospects for the organization's fundraising priorities.
  • Manages OCU’s donor mailing list and database.

 

Staff and Volunteer Management

  • In consultation with the Executive Director and Managing Director, recruits, interviews, and selects well-qualified development staff.
  • Provides support to development team, guiding staff, fellows, and interns in the development of work plans that meet organizational priorities.
  • Engage volunteers for special fund development projects.
  • Effectively engages and utilizes the Board Fundraising Committee.

 

Communications and Outreach

  • Identifies, cultivates, sustains, and maintains relationships with individual donors (prospective, monthly, and sustaining) through mailings, face-to-face donor cultivation meetings, community engagement opportunities, and other creative mechanisms to build and maintain relationships.
  • Ensures quality production and distribution of communications materials (both online and print), including brochures, monthly newsletters, social media and website updates to support fundraising activities.
  • Makes public appearances/accepts speaking engagements to share information about OCU with the community.

 

Other Duties

  • As determined by mutual agreement.
  • Provide management and leadership support that directly impacts and encourages OCU’s staff development and team-building efforts.

Skills/Experience: 

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will be driven, adaptable, and emotionally intelligent. Additionally, the successful candidate will possess the following:

  • Minimum 3 years of experience and success in non-profit development and fundraising.
  • Undergraduate or graduate degree highly desirable.
  • Proven track record of operating in fast-paced environments with donors of all types: individuals, foundations, corporations, and foreign and domestic governments.
  • Skilled in establishing trusted partnerships throughout the organization; maintaining and managing highly-confidential information; using expert judgment when dealing with internal and external constituents.
  • Demonstrated experience in special events planning and management.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with federal and private foundations.
  • Demonstrated experience managing staff and volunteers.
  • Extremely organized with superb attention to detail, balanced against consistent production of timely, error-free work.
  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills: the ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically with grantors, volunteers, donors, clients and colleagues on all levels.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills.
  • Strong intercultural understanding and comfort working independently without supervision and in culturally diverse settings.
  • A commitment to social justice and a basic understanding of the role that education and the arts can play in social change.
  • Personal qualities of maturity, humility, strong work ethic, and a roll-up-my-sleeves attitude.
  • Familiarity and experience with Salesforce highly desirable.

Proficiency in the following required - fundraising software, word processing, spreadsheets, E-mail and Google Drive

Compensation/Benefits: 

COMPENSATION AND START DATE

Salary is commensurate with experience, in the range of $52,000 - $60,000 and includes a competitive benefits package with medical and dental plan, workers’ compensation insurance, paid time off, and holidays. The position will require some evening and weekend hours. Candidates are expected to be looking for long-term positions based in Washington, D.C. The projected start date is September 5, 2018.
