Worldfund, a 15-year old US-based nonprofit organization promoting quality education in Latin America, seeks to hire a full time Development Director (DD).  The New York or Washington, D.C.-based role is key to the organization’s senior management team and will report to Worldfund’s Executive Director (ED).  

The DD will work closely with the Development Team in order to broaden awareness and understanding of the impact of Worldfund programs through new outreach efforts.  The regional focus for this role is the United States.  The DD will work closely with the ED and selected board members on a committee to plan and implement a 3-5 year development strategy for the U.S.

The successful candidate should possess a strong understanding of Latin America, a sense of social entrepreneurship and a passion for improving education.  S/he will have a proven track record of fundraising with exceptional communications and marketing skills.  

Experience working in a fast-paced entrepreneurial environment is critical, as are strong teamwork skills and leadership abilities.  He or she will be diplomatic, of the highest integrity, and possess sound judgment and excellent interpersonal skills.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Ensure proper execution of development strategies as per Worldfund's five year strategic plan, in order to scale the organization’s three flagship programs
  • Open doors and develop individual donors in the U.S.
  • Implement major donor stewardship efforts
  • Use Worldfund’s fundraising program directives to secure financial support from individuals, foundations, and corporations
  • Develop cultivation and solicitation strategies for high-potential prospects utilizing, as appropriate, major gift, planned gift, and/or event-based approaches
  • Prepare formal funding requests, provide required follow-up reports and renewal applications to major sources of private support
  • Supervise proposal writing and the management of fundraising tasks (donor management system inputs, grant writing, donor reports) when related to the relationships managed  
  • Manage the development team's human resource effort; hire and evaluate staff                  
  • Supervise three to four fundraising events per year in the USA: NYC black tie gala and other events in other locations
  • Manage online and recurring fundraising appeals with high-potential donors and prospects
  • Work with the Board of Directors Development Chair to guide board’s fundraising efforts
  • Work with the Communications Director to ensure delivery of effective messaging to Worldfund supporters
Skills/Experience: 
  • Passion for Worldfund’s mission
  • Connection to Latin America, particularly to Brazil and/or Mexico
  • Bachelor's Degree; Master's Degree preferred
  • 10+ years of professional experience in private or nonprofit sectors
  • Demonstrable competency in strategic planning and business development, including in a nonprofit setting
  • Experience and comfort managing relationships with prospects and funders
  • Outstanding organizational and leadership abilities
  • Working knowledge of performance/operation metrics
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, in addition to strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to multitask and take initiative in an entrepreneurial environment
  • Demonstrated management and leadership qualities
  • US travel, as required
  • Outstanding attention to detail
  • Fluency in Spanish / Portuguese preferred, but not required
