The American Heart Association (AHA) has an excellent opportunity for a Director of Journal Operations in our National Centeroffice.This position will be located in Waltham, MA .
Areas of Responsibility:
- Direct, manage and develop journal staff to meet the department and AHA goals.
- Develop and manage budget for 8 journals.
- Manage and direct editors and editorial boards, aligning with strategies of the Scientific Publishing Committee.
- Oversee Peer Review of journals to achieve optimal efficiency and ensure compliance with ICJME regulations and other industry standards. Ensure there is cross-training across journals amongst staff.
- Oversee, with director, policy and procedure and development for Scientific Publishing, including but not limited to web site strategy and development and other strategic issues for the scientific publishing commtitee.
- Serve as the primarily liaison with the Publisher, AHA Journals Production Manager, and the AHA Marketing Manager for the journals.
- Manage and foster relationships with the Scientific Publishing Committee, as well as external stakeholders such as scientists, clinicians, science volunteers, other society publishers, and so on.
- Collaborate effectively with other OSO departments and AHA departments to meet departmental and organizational goals.
- Continously strive to establish OSO as a leader within AHA, including but limited to Heartwalk participation, Employee Giving participation, Climate Survey participation, and so on.
- Working with other director, set up and oversee Independent contracts for all journals, Independent contractors include, but are not limited to, statisticians, medical writers, and medical illustrators.
Educational Background:
Bachelor’s degree in a field related to Science or Publishing/Library
Skills/Experience:
- Minimum of 8 years’ related experience
- Knowledge of and experience employing the principles, practices, and techniques of operations for scientific publications
- Knowledge of practices and trends associated with new and emerging technology and how it relates to scientific publishing
- Knowledge of scientific publishing production and editorial processes
- Knowledge of the peer review and scientific copyediting processes
- Advanced knowledge of online publishing
- Ability to meet and deal with all levels of AHA staff, volunteers, and senior executives from other non-profit and for-profit organizations
- Ability to recruit, train, counsel and supervise individuals
