Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) is seeking a Specialist - Advocacy Learning. A critical part of increasing sector and societal impact (as outlined in the HFHI strategic plan) is advocacy. Advocacy enables Habitat to further shape society’s thinking around housing issues and influence public policies and systems that affect access to affordable housing. Habitat aspires to be a premier expert in affordable housing, with affiliates and state organizations having powerful strategies and resources for engaging in advocacy, particularly at the state and local levels. Many Habitat affiliates need support to build the skills and systems to implement effective advocacy, and this position would manage such capacity-building efforts.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Specialist – Advocacy Learning will provide training, tools and resources for Habitat organizations to help them build their advocacy knowledge and capacity at the all levels. Additionally, this position will assist with the development and implementation of learning strategy to support Habitat’s advocacy work. 

  • Create/update advocacy learning modules and strategy for the network
  • Oversee knowledge management for the network regarding advocacy
  • Provide training, tools and resources for Habitat organizations to help them build advocacy knowledge and capacity to influence policies and systems at all levels, particularly state and local:
  • Through a mulch-faceted, approach including podcasts, webinars and in person training, design and present eLearning, webinars, curriculum, etc., sometimes in cooperation with other Habitat departments (for internal HFHI and external use)
  • Create a training calendar
  • Communicate to affiliates about available training, tools and resources
  • Help affiliates integrate advocacy into their work
  • Collaborate with State Support Organizations on state-level training in order to build the advocacy capacity of affiliates
  • Work closely with US-focused members of the Government Relations & Advocacy team
  • Work closely with advocacy campaign team to create training modules and supportive resources for U.S. campaigns
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree
Skills/Experience: 
  • 3-5 years of relevant work experience
  • Strong understanding of advocacy processes and how to build advocacy skills and systems
  • Experience with digital platforms and creating online courses
  • Ability to balance innovative thinking with practical learning and knowledge sharing solutions
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, plan and coordinate learning delivery using various delivery methods including face-to-face, webinars, conference calls
  • Demonstrated knowledge of technology and ability to work effectively with multiple departments across the organization
  • Adept at building relationships and trust with affiliates and state organizations
  • Track record of strong collaboration and communication across teams and departments
  • Strong logic/reasoning/analytical abilities
  • Strong project leadership skills: able to bring together the right people to solve a problem, able to manage multiple strands of work towards an overall objective
  • Strong communicator both verbally and in writing
  • 30% Travel (if not located in DC)
  • Familiarity with Habitat and its affiliates preferred
  • Familiarity with affordable housing and/or community development preferred
