The American Heart Association (AHA) has an excellent opportunity for a Program Initiatives Manager for The Million Hearts Collaborative. Location of candidate can be flexible as long as location allows for efficient and cost-effective travel.

The Program Initiatives Manager directs the programmatic responsibilities of the American Heart Association’s cooperative agreement with the Center for Disease Control’s Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention (CDC-RFA-DP15-150402CONT16, “Partner Support for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention”). The focus of the cooperative agreement is in support of the Million Hearts® Collaboration, which has fourteen national partners that work in collaboration to address Million Hearts® goals and objectives by mobilizing public health and clinical sectors, promoting the use of effective best practices; and building strategies to support national, state, and local level efforts addressing heart disease, stroke and their risk factors.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • In collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control, identify Million Hearts®-related materials (evidence-based cardiovascular prevention strategies) most in need of broad dissemination. Increase capacity of partner networks and local affiliates to promote the use of evidence-based and practice-based cardiovascular prevention strategies and approaches.
  • Provide recommendations to increase the adoption/use of key Million Hearts®-related tools or resources, identified in collaboration with Centers for Disease Control, as ready for broad dissemination, and monitor and track the uptake and use of these tools and resources by key partners
  • Develop and disseminate cardiovascular health messages. Facilitate Million Hearts®-community connections at the state/local level, using social media/digital communities and other appropriate mediums.
  • Convene partners and provide opportunities for the sharing of best practices and evidence-based cardiovascular approaches at the state and local level. Support face-to-face and virtual workgroup meetings of Million Hearts® Collaboration members.
  • Write and produce individual and state/local level success stories and develop and implement dissemination plans for each. Activate Million Hearts Collaboration partners’/supporters’ extensive networks to share success stories through a variety of channels and methods such as e-newsletters and websites
  • Support leadership meetings between the American Heart Association and the Center for Disease Control’s Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's Degree in a related field of study.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in advocacy activities, government affairs, and/or public health.
  • Successful experience or demonstrated understanding in issues related to public health, advocacy/public policy, community organization/mobilization, and media/communications
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with volunteers, staff, and the public as part of a team
  • Exceptional oral and written communications skills
  • Demonstrated ability to simultaneously manage multiple, complex projects in varying stages of development under time constraints.
  • Must be able to travel overnight approx. 15% of the time.
