National Consultant, Volunteerism

The American Heart Association has a great opportunity for a National Consultant, Volunteerismbased out of our National Center office! This position can be remote but must be located near a major airport.

This individual will be responsible for developing organization-wide volunteerism strategies, resources, and tools. Responsible for researching best practices to produce a robust suite of volunteer opportunities that bring the end-to-end volunteerism initiative recommendations to life. Responsible for consulting with national and affiliate departments/teams to create a network of meaningful volunteer and staff partnerships and to drive the growth of the organization’s volunteer base including an excellent volunteer experience that meets people where they are.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Manage key nationwide volunteerism projects and initiatives, working in partnership with volunteer and staff committees and task forces. Create initiatives that will result in building a stronger, future-focused culture of volunteerism
  • Work with various departments and teams to build new volunteer opportunities that are relevant for a diverse range of people of all ages and backgrounds. Create a continuum of volunteer opportunities to provide something for everyone
  • Create compelling volunteer opportunities that engage key audiences such as youth, science, companies and workplaces of today and into the future, in a variety of ways such as group/team experiences that are social media “shareable,” micro-volunteering, skills-based and virtual opportunities. Ensure a robust portfolio of community opportunities
  • Create a process for ongoing development and refresh of engaging volunteer opportunities that are responsive to current external and internal needs. Assess current volunteer communications and develop a holistic plan
  • Ensure that AHA’s staff and systems support for volunteerism is embedded throughout the organization and used to its fullest capacity, including working with appropriate staff partners on technology solutions and developing needed resources
  • In partnership with other departments develop training and orientation materials to be used by all staff for various volunteer constituencies Provide advice, consultation and timely strategic planning for volunteerism
  • Develop goals and key performance indicators. Stay up-to-date on volunteerism trends to ensure AHA remains future focused, share trends to position AHA for success
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s Degree
Skills/Experience: 
  • At least five years of relevant experience
  • Experience in high level volunteer leadership recruitment, board development and cultivation, volunteer career-pathing
  • Experience in a non-profit or fundraising role
  • Successful experience in development, marketing or health impact
  • Demonstrated passion for volunteerism including successful experience recruiting and managing volunteers
  • Knowledgeable about current and future volunteerism trends
  • Ability to travel add 10% local and overnight stay

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience in a broad range of volunteer initiatives preferred, including virtual, youth, corporate, micro, skills based and science opportunities
