Media Advocacy Manager - Voices for Healthy Kids

The American Heart Association has an excellent opportunity for a Media Advocacy Manager in our National Advocacy Enterprise on the Voices for Healthy Kids team. This position can be remote but MUST live near a major airport.

This individual will be responsible for providing strategic consultation, technical assistance, and execution support of media advocacy components of state and city-based advocacy policy change campaigns related to making the places kids live, learn and play healthier.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Provide editorial guidance in the development, drafting and distribution of communication tools used by policy change campaigns in the field.
  • Responsible for building template tools as well as working with individual campaigns for customized needs and training.
  • Responsible for maintaining and building message consistency for the team and campaigns in the creation of tools and materials. Translation of message research into user-friendly tools for the field.
  • Serve as a strategic resource on state and local communications advocacy and related media issues to campaigns working to make the places kids live, learn and play healthier.
  • Manage vendors and contractors who support media advocacy work for Voices for Healthy Kids.
  • Serve as a media advisor, along with the Communications Manager and the Marketing Manager, on state and local advocacy issues to Voices for Healthy Kids senior team.
  • Represent Voices for Healthy Kids and its agenda in appropriate health related partnerships and coalitions, providing consultation and strategic recommendations dealing specifically with earned news media and systems and policy change work.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, Public Policy or related field.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in media advocacy, public relations, non-profit or corporate communications and/or journalism, with a demonstrated succession of increasing professional responsibilities
  • Comprehensive knowledge of general media operations (both print and electronic), including social media.
  • Experience in providing support for public policy media campaigns (paid and unpaid) at the state and/or community level.
  • Knowledge of governmental operations, both at the state and local level.
  • Successful experience with building or demonstrated understanding of health equity and role it plays in public policy.
  • Experience working with or commissioning polling and/or message research and the ability to translate findings for others.
  • Must be able to travel overnight approx. 10% of the time.

Here are some of the preferred skills we are looking for:

  • Experience with public health issues is desirable.
  • Experience working with coalitions in public policy campaigns is desirable.
  • Experience training non-media professional in media advocacy strategy and tactics is preferred.
  • Fluency in Spanish is preferred.
  • InDesign proficiency preferred.
