Works with patients, family members and/or health-care providers to assist patients in their efforts to identify appropriate clinical trials and help overcome obstacles to enrollment. Utilizes nursing assessment skills to determine qualification for particular trials. Educates patients about their diagnosis, and the risks and benefits of both standard of care and clinical trial treatment options. Supports patients and family through decisions around treatment options, including decisions to end treatment. Collaborates with LLS Information Specialists to provide education, services and support to patients and family members. Serves as primary resource to Information Specialists for guidance around all aspects of clinical trials.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Independently maintain own caseload of patients seeking enrollment into clinical trials; this includes assessing, educating, and objectively presenting information to patients about available treatment options, including clinical trials
- Use problem solving skills to help patients overcome obstacles to enrollment
- Collaborates with LLS’s Information Resource Center to educate and support patients and family members in their efforts to understand their diagnosis, treatment options and available services
- Serve in consulting role to the Information Resource Center about clinical trials
- Maintain/increase knowledge and understanding of hematologic cancers, blood and bone marrow transplant and psychosocial aspects of living with cancer
- Contribute to continual process improvement of clinical trial support procedures
- Develop effective working relationships within the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and with trial site staff, investigators, sponsors, patient and professional organizations
- Exhibit comprehensive understanding of ethical standards and Federal Regulations in human subjects research
Educational Background:
Bachelor’s degree in Nursing; Masters preferred. Master’s degree in non-nursing area considered. OCN certification preferred. Current RN licensure required
Skills/Experience:
- Oncology experience preferred; specialty training in Oncology/Hematology preferred; clinical research preferred
- Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred
- Outstanding critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration skills
- Excellent ability to communicate verbally and in writing
- Ability and desire to excel in independent work and in a team environment
- Demonstrated commitment to independent learning and skill enhancement
- Expertise in Microsoft Office including Excel, Word, and OneNote
- Occasional travel to national oncology/hematology meetings and meetings at the National Office of LLS
