The Chief Operations Officer (COO) directs the food sourcing, transportation, logistical, and warehouse operations of the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona across all CFB sites. As a member of the senior leadership team, the COO promotes a work culture that is participatory and collaborative across CFB’s diverse stakeholder groups and constituencies, helping to lead culture changes congruent with CFB’s values and strategic direction. The COO will provide the structure and processes necessary to manage the organization’s current operational activities and projected growth, while also being a key partner in implementing the organization’s strategic plan. The COO’s effectiveness will be evaluated by standard, benchmarked operating metrics of efficiency, effectiveness, and mission-impact. This position is responsible for the safe acquisition, storage, and distribution of food, and must follow food safety best practices in accordance with industry standards.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with all key funding sources.
  • Provide leadership and direction to the team to create an environment of continuous improvement and learning.
  • Budget and account for the execution of operations activities all areas of CFB.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory bodies regarding warehousing, transporting and distributing foods. Regulatory bodies include AIB, Feeding America, Pima County Health Department, USDA, FDA, DES, OSHA, local city, county and state enforcement agencies, and others.
  • Oversee, Lead and Participate in:
    • Warehousing, Production and Order-Fulfillment
    • Supply Chain
    • Quality Control/Inventory
    • Strategy Implementation
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s Degree is required,
Skills/Experience: 
  • 5 - 7 years of progressive operations experience, or a combination of education and experience that will provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities in place of management experience.
  • Non-profit experience is preferred.
  • Ability to handle small, specific details and duties while still developing and maintaining a broad perspective of the organization’s vision, goals and accomplishments.
  • Ability to effectively lead and motivate staff.
  • Proven ability to make complex decisions, allocate resources and prioritize operational objectives.
  • Excellent presentation skills and ability to present complex information to staff, senior leadership, major donors/corporations and the Board of Directors.
  • Experience working with the strategic planning process.
  • Ability to meet crises calmly and show initiative and flexibility in day-to-day operations, e.g. natural disasters, inclement weather, etc.
  • Ability to develop and maintain support of community leadership and build community relationships, including those of funders, business partners & vendors, and other key supporters.
  • Highly motivated with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to multi-task.
  • Experience driving continuous process improvement initiatives.
  • Ability to interact effectively and collaboratively with individuals of diverse backgrounds, experiences, and personalities.
  • Must have strong financial acumen to develop and manage annual operating budget.
  • Exceptional conflict-resolution and problem-solving skills.
