The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking highly-qualified applicants for the full-time position of Director to take the lead on fundraising and outreach events in Canada, specifically the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), Vancouver, Montreal and Ottawa. The Director is based in Toronto, with periodic travel as needed, and reports to the Managing Director based in Toronto. The anticipated start date for this position is in October 2019.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Develop, manage and oversee the strategic plan for development and outreach strategy for Canada with a specific outlook on the GTA and Ottawa, while representing the work of HRW to existing and prospective supporters;
  • Build sustainable financial support for the organization by soliciting major gifts (Can$25,000+ ) and general support funds from supporters across Canada;
  • Oversee strategic fundraising, outreach, and cultivation events and new opportunities in Canada including: HRW’s annual Can$1M Toronto Voices for Justice dinner, multi-day Toronto Film Festival, researcher briefings, privately hosted dinners, and other events;
  • Working with Committee leadership and members to develop strategic fundraising, outreach and cultivation initiatives, and engage their Canadian networks;
  • Build connections with and develop a portfolio of donor prospects that are identified through research, volunteer identification, cultivation events and other sources that have the ability and affinity to give to HRW;
  • Research, identify, cultivate, steward and solicit prospective foundations and existing foundations that have the ability and affinity to give to HRW;
  • Administer HRW’s legal entity in Canada including filing annual reports and corporate notices, working with Canadian external legal counsel, and overseeing the audit;
  • Project manage the following aspects of HRW’s legal entity in Canada: convening quarterly Board meetings, fulfilment of Contractor Agreements and Schedule “A”, complete financial transfers, and other items as they arise;
  • Oversee income tracking & projections, expenditure budgets, event expenses and revenue, and regularly monitor the department budget to ensure that resources are allocated appropriately;
  • Implement a strategic planned giving program that is donor-centered to plan current and future charitable gifts in a way that meets the donor’s philanthropic goals and balances personal, family and tax considerations;
  • Lead, motivate, and mentor direct-reports, including communicating clear expectations, setting performance objectives, providing regular and timely constructive feedback, ensuring balanced workload, providing guidance on professional growth, and monitoring staff well-being as it pertains to stress and resilience issues and self-care; and
  • Perform other responsibilities as may be required.
Educational Background: 
A bachelor’s degree in international relations, social sciences, or related studies is required.
An advanced degree in philanthropy, business, finance, communications/marketing or law is desirable. CFRE designation considered an asset.
Skills/Experience: 
  • A minimum of seven to ten years of fundraising experience is required.
  • A proven track record in creating and stewarding major gifts programs and extensive experience managing high-level donor relationships are required.
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing the production of large events, such as annual fundraising dinners and smaller bespoke events; including budget, revenue tracking and projections is required.
  • Sound knowledge of the Canadian not-for-profit sector and trends within the social justice, human rights, or international development fields is preferred.
  • Experience with Raiser’s Edge, Salesforce or relational databases and/or donor database report tracking is an asset.
  • Strong oral and written communications skills in English including excellent presentation skills are required. French or other language skill is an asset.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work collaboratively within HRW as well as with external partners are required.
  • Demonstrated commitment to human rights and/or international issues and the capacity to master and represent the mission and programs of HRW are essential.
  • An entrepreneurial and disciplined self-starter who can work independently, but also function as a member of a development team, is highly desirable.
  • Ability to travel locally, within Canada, and internationally is required.
