The Community Engagement Coordinator (CEC) will provide crucial staff support across a suite of programs focused on volunteer-based restoration of native habitats in San Francisco Bay (mostly on/near RBACS) and engagement of community members in the work of the Program and Center. This position reports to the RBACS Center Director (CD) and will work closely with the San Francisco Bay Conservation Program Manager (CPM) in fulfillment of the following functions. The general schedule for this position is Tuesday through Saturday. 

Areas of Responsibility: 

Engagement – 50%

Volunteer coordination

  • Develop a coordinated volunteer program that efficiently connects interested volunteers with appropriate opportunities at RBACS and within the Bay Program (e.g., attending a weekend restoration event, participating in waterbird surveys, etc.), recruits additional volunteer support where needed (e.g., through outreach to local and area businesses/schools), and ensures that volunteers are properly trained, onboarded, and retained
  • Lead (or find volunteer leaders for) mid-week volunteer events at RBACS (approximately 3 events per month) focused on center needs (e.g., trail maintenance, weeding, and other center-based projects)
  • Develop a volunteer database that can be used for recruitment and outreach

Waterbird survey support

  • Work with the CPM to recruit and retain waterbird survey volunteers and ensure survey needs are adequately met, including the development of a volunteer training program to elevate volunteer monitors to a position of leadership for the program
  • Provide backup to the CPM on the implementation of the Pt. Richmond and Richardson Bay waterbird surveys, held bimonthly from November to March

Audubon Youth Leader (AYL) support

  • Work with the CD to further develop AYL program, including how to achieve programmatic goals, increase enrollment, and serve a broader audience
  • Serve as a second adult program leader during offsite program days (approximately 5 events per month)

Community Based Restoration – 35%

Coordinate community based restoration events at Aramburu Island, Blackie’s Pasture and other restoration sites throughout San Francisco Bay as projects come online (e.g., eelgrass restoration at Pier 94).

  • Most of these events currently happen on Aramburu Island in Richardson Bay, occur on Saturdays (approximately 2 Saturdays/month), and are primarily focused on vegetation management (invasive removal, native plant revegetation). The REC will be responsible for setting the event schedule, running the events (including volunteer recruitment/coordination), and event follow up. To conduct the restoration, the REC will coordinate with the San Francisco Bay Conservation Program Manager (CPM) to identify restoration priorities, actions, and methodologies.

Manage the RBACS nursery

  • Work with the CPM and the Center Director (CD) to identify how the nursery can help meet programmatic plant needs, to including cultivating plants to be used in restoration projects on and offsite, and developing a cohesive vision for how the nursery aligns with relevant State/National programs (e.g., Plants for Birds)
  • The CEC will be responsible for maintaining the plants in the nursery (watering, etc.) and maintaining the nursery itself  

Other – 15%

Rental support

  • Serve as day-of on-site point person for rentals at RBACS
  • Be available to assist with necessary rental deliveries and pre-event walk through
  • Lead tours of Lyford House to potentials clients and vendors

Assist the SF Bay Program Director, CPM, and CD on other tasks as needed, including but not limited to:

  • Light administrative duties as needed to support ongoing programs (e.g., copying, filling, prepping for meetings)
  • Writing content/providing information for reports to funders as appropriate
  • “Plugging in” where needed (e.g., providing survey support for shorebird or vegetation surveys, preparing the Center for key donor events, etc.)
Educational Background: 
2-4 years’ experience and undergraduate degree in a relevant field. Relevant experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Strong desire to work in a support capacity for a complex suite of ongoing conservation programs
  • Ability to identify potential efficiencies and work across projects to achieve programmatic goals
  • Attentive to detail with strong follow through
  • Flexible work style (e.g., desire to work in a team environment as well as independently as needed)
  • Desire to work with diverse communities not typically engaged in conservation efforts
  • Comfortable speaking to the public and engaging with community members to communicate program objectives and project goals
  • Flexible with scheduling and ability to anticipate upcoming needs; careful time management and punctuality
  • Comfortable with long hours in the field in adverse weather and on difficult terrain
  • Experience with Microsoft office suite including Excel
  • Bird and plant identification skills a plus (especially knowledge of local shorebirds, waterfowl, common songbirds, and raptors, as well as wetland, upland, and pollinator plants)
  • Experience with power and hand tools a plus, including ability to clean and maintain field equipment
