The Program Officer (PO) will report to the lead for the MNCH D&T Strategic Data Analytics and Synthesis (SDAS) initiative. The PO will oversee a cross-cutting clinical trials portfolio with programmatic and strategic linkages to the SDAS initiative.
- Conceptualize and manage a cross-cutting clinical trials portfolio assessing key intervention candidates spanning nutrition and gut health. Required skills include understanding of applied epidemiology, observational study and clinical trial design and implementation, statistical analysis plans, and interpretation of evidence.
- Translate pre-clinical evidence and establish a priori go/no-go criteria for transitioning investment portfolios from pre-clinical to clinical research.
- Critically analyze and synthesize data and evidence across the portfolio to inform strategic decisions and enable resource prioritization. Conceptualize, conduct and manage internal data analysis efforts through (a) assessment of strategic analytical needs across the portfolio; (b) conceptualization of data analysis plans; (c) assessment of methodology and interpretation of analytical results; (d) engagement with internal and external data scientists. Interpret and translate data, analytical methods and results. Generate materials for consumers of data with various levels of data comfort.
- Innovate on continuous improvements to the MNCH D&T process of synthesizing, tracking, analyzing, visualizing and measuring the impact of data from grants and key external resources across the MNCH D&T portfolio.
- Interface with a diverse set of internal and external stakeholders, including multiple BMGF program strategy teams and partners at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) and the Institute for Disease Modeling (IDM).
- Track and analyze global and regional burden estimates through (a) synthesis and compilation of morbidity and mortality burden data across multiple sources; (b) basic secondary data analyses to improve internal understanding and/or visualization of data; (c) creation and maintenance of burden reference decks for internal and external use; (d) periodic updates of materials with newly available analytical results and/or newly published data.

Desired knowledge and skills include:
- Doctoral degree in a relevant quantitative discipline highly preferred (e.g. epidemiology, biostatistics). Global health training with an accompanying degree (MPH, MS, MHS) ideal.
- Deep understanding of global health and development issues, particularly in the field of maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH). Field experience in South Asia or Sub Saharan Africa preferable.
- Strong quantitative skills and comfort working with data, including the ability to extract appropriate data to convey complex information through the use of supporting tables, graphs and other visual representations.
- Excellent understanding of applied epidemiology, including observational study and clinical trial design.
- Experience and comfort conducting data analyses and interpreting and communicating analytical methods and results for lay audiences.
- Excellent software skills with Microsoft Office applications, Stata, SAS or another statistical program, and ArcGIS.
- Ability to learn new content quickly, identify connections and second-order implications and demonstrate competence with internal/external teams.
- Determination, extreme diligence, and the ability to work independently, managing multiple priorities and demanding timelines.
- Experience in a role requiring collaboration (both internal and external) as well as a solid understanding of the realities and complexities of working within and effectively managing projects within a complex matrixed environment.
