The Philanthropy Writer writes and edits private funding proposals and reports for individual, foundation and corporate major donors, as well as other communications pieces for major donors in collaboration with the Marketing team.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Writes and edits private individual, foundation and corporate funding proposals and impact reports, typically in the $100K+ and $1M+ range (80%). They collaborate with fundraisers, conservation program, and finance staff to craft successful letters of intent, funding proposals and impact reports for the Conservancy’s work in Washington and globally.
  • Assists in the writing, editing, design and production of other donor communications, often in collaboration with Washington’s Marketing team (10%). Products may include: donor thank-you letter templates, event invitations, outreach emails, website articles, internal campaign updates, presentations, donor profiles, cases for support, magazine inserts and fact sheets.  
  • Project manages donor communications (10%). Maintains a comprehensive queue and reference library of proposals, reports, other donor communications and commonly used materials and budgets. Clarifies team roles and deliverables, monitors timelines and communicates progress. Ensures efficiency and consistency in donor communications and compliance with Conservancy protocols through applying messaging and branding standards, using best practices in budget development, and securing reviews and approvals. May work with freelance writers, graphic designers, photographers, printers and other vendors and staff, as required.

Level of Position: This is a junior position and duties are performed under general supervision and established guidelines. Within the scope of the position, the Philanthropy Writer will:

  • Manage multiple projects at the same time and coordinate teams to meet deadlines.
  • Accurately interpret and represent budgets and financial reports at the project, program, state, and global levels.
  • May serve as team lead on assigned communication initiatives.
  • Uses a sophisticated understanding of Conservancy strategies, programs, partnerships and funding needs to inform work.
  • Build relationships with fundraisers, finance and conservation staff, and may engage directly with external partners and funders.
  • Work within approved budgets to engage vendors and contractors.
  • Work independently and resolves issues without requiring detailed management.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity in handling confidential information.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree and 2 years related experience, OR Associate’s Degree and 4 years related experience OR equivalent combination of related education and experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Travel occasionally, work long and/or flexible hours as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Experience writing successful funding proposals.
  • Experience writing or editing one or more of the following:  newsletter, magazine, annual report, web-site articles/stories, donor profiles, presidential acknowledgment letters, campaign brochures, funding proposals, fact sheets, presentations, or equivalent.
  • Experience coordinating multiple projects.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Excellent writing and proofreading skills.
  • Knowledge and application of current and evolving trends in major gift fundraising and working with institutional funders.
  • Experience researching, analyzing, interpreting and compiling technical information from divergent sources.
  • Proficiency with document management, strong organizational skills, and attention to detail.
  • Multi-lingual skills and/or multi-cultural experience appreciated.
  • Basic graphic design and layup skills appreciated.
  • Experience manipulating, analyzing and interpreting financial data.
  • Ability to organize time, manage diverse activities, and meet deadlines.
  • Familiarity with communication technologies and best practices.
  • Experience presenting to diverse audiences.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Starting salary range: $51,000 - $57,000 annually, dependent on qualifications and experience.
