Works closely with internal and external partners to drive progress in the foundation’s overall goals across program areas and geographies through use of leadership time and voice. This role will manage a wide range of relationships with key partners to achieve the foundation's desired impact, synthesize and frame key tradeoff decisions for leadership, provide briefings and updates to foundation leadership, and represent the foundation in meetings with external stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and impact others. Demonstrated ability to work with efficiency, diplomacy, and flexibility particularly as part of a team. Experience working on teams with diverse cultural and professional backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated results in a leadership role with an emphasis on advocacy, leadership scheduling, logistics, strategic event planning with experience in staffing senior leadership, preparing briefing materials, memorandums, etc.
  • Ability to synthesize nuanced, complex information and prepare clear, concise, strategic and actionable recommendations in service of foundation goals. Ability to continually prioritize effectively against goals.
  • Ability to learn quickly, filling knowledge gaps across the Communications and Executive Engagement functions, to provide appropriate facilitation and excellent support across these functions to Principals and their leadership teams
  • Excellent communications skills including writing, editing, and verbal communications.
  • Intellectual quickness, curiosity, discipline, and resourcefulness.  Demonstrated excellent judgment and calm under stressful conditions.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively cultivate and manage relationships with leadership, senior staff, consultants, and foundation partners.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness and interest in leading and coordinating colleagues from across a variety of disciplines in a complex organization. History of results in roles requiring logical, systematic thinking while managing multiple priorities in a highly changing environment.
  • A deep commitment to the overall mission of the foundation, its programs, and an approach consistent with the foundation’s guiding principles.  Committed to delivering results against the mission and holds self to the highest ethical standards.
Educational Background: 
Advanced degree in public policy, political science, international relations, economics or related field with 10+ years of demonstrated leadership experience, or equivalent experience
Skills/Experience: 
  • Manage the Strategic Planning and Engagement team to ensure the team’s work is executed in a high-quality manner. Specific areas of team responsibility include:
    • Developing with multiple stakeholders an annual Advocacy and Outreach Plan for Bill and Melinda Gates and Sue Desmond-Hellmann;
    • The planning and execution of high-quality trips and external engagements hand in hand with colleagues across divisions;
    • Prioritizing and scheduling internal time for Bill and Melinda Gates and Sue Desmond-Hellmann;
    • Managing the flow of information to leaders, including briefing materials and meeting pre-reads.
  • This role manages people and is responsible for hiring and maintaining the team members needed to achieve our goals, ensuring effective employee onboarding, communicating performance expectations, creating goal alignment, integrating project and change management, giving and seeking feedback, providing coaching, measuring progress and holding people accountable, supporting employee development, and recognizing achievement and lessons learned.
  • Other specific responsibilities include:
    • Serving as the Trip Director for a limited number (e.g., 2-4) trips per year with Bill and Melinda Gates
    • Liaising with the Gates’ private offices to ensure effective collaboration with key stakeholders
    • Synthesizing and presenting key tradeoff decisions to the Chief Strategy Officer with regard to Bill and Melinda Gates and Sue Desmond-Hellmann travel and internal time
    • Regularly working with foundation and private office stakeholders to continually improve how we do this work
