The Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) Combat Stress Recovery Program Screening Specialist supports the Combat Stress Recovery Program (CSRP) leadership to recruit and screen wounded service members who are dealing with invisible injuries, e.g., post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and combat stress, for inclusion in mental health programs including Project Odyssey®, the outdoor experiential learning program which encourages wounded warriors to challenge themselves both physically and mentally while in a supportive environment. The CSRP Screening Specialist provides wounded warriors with comprehensive screening, needs assessment, and coordination of internal and external resources to support these warriors and enhance their resiliency and psychological well-being.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Collaborate with WWP’s mental health and wellness teammates to guide wounded warrior recruitment and selection for participation in Project Odyssey®. Serve as initial point-of-contact for warriors and family support members who indicate an interest in Project Odyssey®, including participants from assigned WWP Warrior Care Network facilities.
  • Serve as subject-matter expert and resource in the planning, coordination, and execution of and participation in mental health programs including Project Odysseys®, enhancing the quality of warriors’ resiliency and psychological well-being.
  • Serve as primary triage for internal mental health and wellness program referrals, and coordinate handoff to internal or external resources as appropriate.
  • Assist to coordinate support resources, e.g., internal and external resources, programs, and agencies, for warriors to achieve their readjustment goals. Coordinate resources to empower warrior recovery and promote psychological well-being. Provide external referrals to warriors, their families, and caregivers, who have been identified as potentially benefiting from counseling, peer group support, or other psychological services.
  • Conduct routine warrior outreach and needs assessment using specific criteria identified by Wounded Warrior Project. Complete warrior outreach assessment and the implementation of resources to meet warrior needs.
  • Assess warrior’s progress in pursuit of his or her personal goals. Develop and encourage a collaborative relationship with warriors to maximize the warrior’s ability to make informed decisions, utilizing a warrior-centric model, within organizational parameters.
  • Maintain and ensure efficacy of Project Odyssey® regional recruiting model, including identifying trends to assist in strategic program decision-making.
  • Serve as a subject-matter expert and trainer for suicide prevention training, adventure-based learning, and couples’ programming. Be trained in and certified to serve as an internal facilitator for education initiatives, e.g., SafeTALK, ASIST, and Project Adventure.
  • Develop and disseminate CSRP-specific materials for other WWP teams.
  • Design evidence-based programs, e.g., psycho-educational briefs and other educational material for internal and external workshops, briefings, and WWP programs, to assist warriors to identify psychological triggers and provide warriors with coping skills to assist them to overcome barriers to mental well-being and achieve successful reintegration into civilian life. Conduct internal and external program briefs.
  • Build relationships with external vendors and assist in programmatic development, in facilitating group activities, and providing ongoing support to Project Odyssey participants.
  • Maintain current and accurate data in WWP intranet electronic tracking systems, e.g., SalesForce.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, rehabilitation counseling, case management, or related mental healthcare field required.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software, e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to travel in support of WWP programs and services outreach.
  • Ability to engage in highly physical outdoor activities and events, e.g., high and low ropes courses, water sports, hiking, climbing, and horseback riding.

Work Environment/Physical Demands

  • Requires lifting and carrying items up to 50 pounds.

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Five years of experience working with veteran-focused mental health programming or case management and assisting military and veteran populations in support of their mental health well-being and readjustment.
    • A combination of three years of veteran-focused mental health programming or case management experience plus a master’s degree in social work, psychology, rehabilitation counseling, or related mental health field, may be substituted for this five-year experience requirement.
  • Must be able to travel between 25% - 50% of the time including overnight and weekend travel

Preferences

  • Master’s degree in social work, psychology, rehabilitation counseling, case management, or related mental healthcare field.
  • Three years of experience working with brain injury and mental health case management.
  • Two years of experience designing evidence-based programs.
