We seek a Regional Deputy Director (DD) who will be responsible for managing the foundation’s Life Sciences Partnership (LSP) function and activities in the Asia region. The function serves to build broader and deeper alliances across multiple industry business sectors, facilitate the optimal collective use and application of foundation and industry assets, and oversees and implements associated cross sector business development efforts. The position and its staff support and service both the Global Health (GH) and Global Development (GD) divisions and their affiliated Program Strategy Teams (PSTs).
- Conduct outreach and develop and implement engagement and partnership program with multinational pharmaceutical companies, developing country manufacturers, the biotech industry and institutional and early stage investors.
- Conduct business development transactions with external parties in support of the foundation’s product supply and product development goals and leverages investments tools including the use of guaranties, loans, equity investments and grants.
- Provide intelligence and landscape mapping, high level relationship management, opportunity sourcing, development of industry incentive constructs, direct supplier product and program related investment (PRI) contracting, and cross-PST advisory services.
- Educate the investor community of the importance of a meaningful social contract for poor and developing countries. Shape company behavior and focus on promoting evolutionary business model (shared R&D / appropriate returns).
- Facilitate the development of annual investment plans and budgets, develop, modify and implement strategy under the direction of the Director.
- Work with foundation leadership as requested to address cross-cutting issues and improve functions and performance.
- Accountable for the identification and assessment of key portfolio risks, and the development and administration of mitigation/contingency plans at the portfolio level.
- Advise, mentor, and support colleagues within the foundation and their grantees in the design, enhancement, and implementation of project, initiatives and engagements. Develop partnerships and grantee relationships to achieve impact, for example, by conducting site visits, convening meetings of key stakeholders, monitoring and evaluating components of grants.
- Serve as a foundational spokesperson to key program-related external constituencies, as well as managing a wide variety of internal relationships, including the Co-Chairs, CEO, Presidents and other programmatic and functional leaders and their teams. This includes both formal and informal presentations such as making speeches, attending conferences, briefings and other meetings as necessary. Key external stakeholders may include:
- Senior industry leaders in the multinational pharmaceutical industry, developing country bio-pharmaceutical manufacturers, and biotechnology.
- Product Development Program (PDP) stakeholders and teams.
- Key multilateral organizations such as WHO, UNICEF and GAVI.
- Select government agencies including Ministries of Health, CDC, and donor related agencies.
The responsibilities of this role require that the successful candidate have a solid background and in depth global management / executive experience in the private sector pharmaceutical business and/or biotech sector (e.g. division General Manager, President level or higher). Additionally, you should have:
- Deep science background in vaccines / bio therapeutics, drugs and or diagnostics. Understanding of biopharma product development and manufacturing processes including discovery, regulatory, clinical trial, process development and production.
- Thorough understanding of and previous responsibility for P&L and balance sheet mechanics.
- Relationship building is key for this role - a network of senior industry stakeholders in relevant industry sectors with an ability to develop and guide high level industry, government, and multilateral relationships and alliance programs.
- Extensive vaccine, drug and/ or diagnostics business development and commercialization experience and skill sets. Negotiation experience in a broad range of initiatives including partnership agreements, supply contracts, product development agreements, IP licensing, technology transfer agreements, and program related investments including guarantees and equity investments.
- Knowledge of global health issues and institutions, and experience working with global partners such as GAVI, WHO, UNICEF, and CDC, and / or experience in developing country settings and knowledge of government health systems a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and guide others. Deep management experience guiding and instructing a group of high performing and motivated global team members.
- Strategic thinking skills (e.g. can match foundation needs to industry capabilities and technologies).
- Excellent listening skills and empathy. Ability to question and challenge colleagues including managers, partners, and clients in constructive manner.
- Effective collaborator and experience working in a matrix environment is preferred.
