This is an exciting opportunity for a leader with 7-10+ accounting and finance experience. The ideal CFO for SMAA has experience leading the finance function in a complex organization; builds strong relationships; is able to adapt in a continually evolving environment; thinks both strategically and tactically to address challenges and opportunities; and thrives in an autonomous and deadline-oriented workplace.

The CFO is responsible for all financial matters of the Southern Maine Agency on Aging. The CFO will report to and work closely with the CEO, and will partner with the leadership team and the Board of Directors to develop and implement strategies across the organization. The CFO will ensure that SMAA has the systems and procedures in place to support effective program implementation and conduct flawless audits. The CFO will lead all day-to-day finance operations of a budget of $5 million, and oversee all compliance and recognition for government (federal and state) contracts and private grants. The CFO will work closely with program leaders and their teams, not only to educate them regarding finance and accounting procedures but also to explore how the finance function can best support program operations.

Areas of Responsibility: 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Finance

  • Develop and utilize forward-looking, predictive models and activity-based financial analyses to provide insight into the organization’s operations and business plans
  • Manage organizational cash flow forecasting; continuously collaborate with program managers to assess the financial efficacy of program operations and establish finance and administrative systems to support program operations
  • Oversee cash, investment, and asset management
  • Oversee financing strategies and activities, as well as banking relationships
  • Provide leadership in strengthening financial reporting at all levels throughout the organization; create and promote a positive and supportive work environment

Planning and Policy

  • Lead the development and monitoring of annual budgets and plans; administer and review all financial plans and compare to actual results with a view to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate
  • Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements. Monitor progress and changes and keep CEO and the leadership team abreast of SMAA’s financial status
  • Develop financial business plans and forecasts
  • Engage the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors to develop short-, medium-, and long-term financial plans and projections
  • Remain up to date on nonprofit audit best practices and state and federal law regarding nonprofit operations

Accounting and Administration

  • Oversee the accounting department to ensure proper maintenance of all accounting systems and function; supervise SMAA’s accounting staff
  • Ensure maintenance of appropriate internal controls and financial procedures
  • Ensure timeliness, accuracy, and usefulness of financial and management reporting for federal and state funders, foundations, and SMAA’s Board of Directors; oversee the preparation and communication of monthly and annual financial statements
  • Coordinate audits. Ensure legal and regulatory compliance regarding all financial functions
  • Oversee all financial, project/program and grants accounting; ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period; collate financial reporting materials for government, corporate, and foundation grants
  • Responsible for Agency administration, including insurance coverage, employee benefits, agency policies and procedures, and other payroll/human resource activities, decisions, or reporting, as appropriate
Educational Background: 
• BA required; CPA and/or MBA preferred
Skills/Experience: 
  • At least 7-10 years in a leadership position in Accounting or Finance with supervisory capacity
  • Experience in effectively communicating key data, including presentations to stakeholders
  • Strong analytic, organization and problem-solving skills which allows for strategic data interpretation versus simple reporting
  • A proactive, hands-on strategic thinker who will own, in partnership with the CEO, the responsibility for finance
  • Highly organized, with strong prioritization and time management skills
  • Strong communication skills
  • Experience managing funds, functions, and outcomes when there are outside forces exerting control
  • Excellent judgment and initiative to operate independently
  • Exercise a high degree of integrity in managing confidential and sensitive information
  • Ability and desire to translate complex financial concepts to individuals
  • Solid experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and accounting for investments
  • Technologically savvy with experience selecting and overseeing software installations and managing relationships with software vendors; advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software
  • Commitment to recruiting, mentoring, training, and retaining a diverse team; the foresight and ability to delegate accordingly

SMAA offers seminars to help navigate the array of insurance and Medicare options, delivers important dietary and fitness practices, and provides older adults with the opportunity to stay active in the community via participation or volunteer-ism.
