The Major Donor Associate Director of Development (ADOD) for the Latin America Region (LAR) designs and executes effective multi-year strategies and plans for major donor gift prospects, and is responsible for securing financial resources to support the conservation goals of Latin America.
The Major Donor Associate Director of Development is responsible for building and managing a portfolio of qualified donors and developing relationships. S/he understands and applies the principles of developing donor strategies. S/he will be responsible for developing direct asks to meet funding needs for conservation priorities in LAR. The ADOD provides opportunities for donors to receive recognition and increase future giving. S/he involves appropriate partners in the field and staff at the Worldwide and Regional Offices, keeping them apprised of interactions, issues or concerns, and directs questions as appropriate. S/he is capable of featuring the programs of the Conservancy in broad terms. S/he may be responsible for volunteer engagement within formal and/or informal networks. The ADOD will be required to use the Conservancy’s donor database and will participate in the development of proposals.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Accountable for fundraising +$2.5 million a year from LAR major donor portfolios and +$6 million a year from WO/States major donor portfolios.
- Build and manage a direct portfolio of 40 - 60 donors, with the capacity to give over $100,000, once the portfolio is developed. Responsible for 75 – 125 visits and 225 – 375 moves annually. Responsible for an indirect portfolio of 45 – 90 donors with the capacity to giver over $100,000 and support the completion of 45 – 90 proposals from the indirect portfolio including the completion of 140 – 200 moves annually.
- Builds and manages asks to TNC Board members in Latin America.
- Demonstrate sensitivity in handling confidential information.
- Ensure compliance with TNC policies and procedures and external (donor/legal/IRS) requirements.
- Financial responsibility includes working within a budget and meeting fundraising objectives.
- Manage assigned projects, coordinating the work of peers and setting deadlines.
- May manage or participate in complex or sensitive negotiations.
- May supervise support or administrative staff.
- Persuasively convey the mission of TNC to diverse groups who are important to the organization’s overall prosperity.
- Travel frequently.
- Work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience building and maintaining long-term relationships with fundraising constituents.
- Experience in asking for and closing gifts of $25,000 or more.
- Experience in managing and tracking multiple prospects and donors.
- Experience working with cross-functional teams.
- Experience, coursework, or other training in fundraising principles and practices.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to determine an individual’s interests, capacity and potential for helping the Conservancy meet its goals, and act appropriately to tie those interests with the Conservancy’s work.
- Ability to think strategically, creating competitive and breakthrough fundraising strategies and plans
- Ability to implement and manage fundraising plans, including individualized cultivation, solicitation and recognition plans.
- Knowledge of current trends in the charitable giving in major giving.
- Demonstrated experience using listening, diplomacy and tact to build strong relationships and motivate donors and volunteers.
- Proven ability to negotiate high profile or sensitive agreements.
- Extensive experience interacting with High Net Worth Individuals (HNWI).
- Decisions may have program-wide impact and may bind the organization financially or legally.
- Superb communication and presentation skills; ability to persuasively convey the mission of TNC to diverse groups including major donors and board members.
- Works effectively in high-tension situations and maintains composure under pressure. Diffuses high-tension situations comfortably.
- Commands attention, can change tactics midstream, and manage group processes during presentations or discussions.
- Demonstrated ability to develop constructive and effective working relationships inside and outside the organization.
- International experience is a plus. Ability to design, implement and direct multiple projects, setting deadlines and ensuring program accountability.
- Fluency in English and Spanish or Portuguese.
