Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) is currently seeking a talented professional for the role of a Communications Manager. The manager will successfully implement the Regional Communications Strategy and related initiatives aimed to position Habitat for Humanity within its priority audiences, while leading and implementing diverse communications and content-production processes. This position will be based in San Jose, Costa Rica.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with AO Staff, NO’s, HQ, and external collaborators, in order to successfully accomplish established objectives.
  • Support the Digital Communications Specialist on content delivery for online channels, ensuring that the content published is in compliance with the key messages derived from the Regional Communications Strategy and HFHI's Global Brand Strategy.
  • Lead the process of gathering, editing, producing and distributing, through appropriate channels, content such as –but not limited to- stories, institutional information, imagery and other editorial pieces that support LAC Regional Communications Strategy.
  • This includes to get and edit (may include translation and/or proofreading) and distribute content from HFHI-LAC network (primarily NO) to feed the different communications materials and outlets required by both, LAC Area Office and HFHI Headquarters. When necessary, lead other professionals (in or out of HFHI) to accomplish this task.
  • Devise and manage all HFHI-LAC media relations plans/outreach, in accordance with HFHI Regional Communications Strategy, while also supporting LAC National Organizations in their national media outreach efforts. This may include -but not limited to:
    • Constantly seek opportunities for stories, op-eds, articles and interviews.
    • Maintaining contact with regional journalists to pitch stories.
    • Act as focal point for all media enquiries in the Area Office.
    • Drafting and/or overseeing media materials.
    • In coordination with the Communications Director, defend Habitat for Humanity's reputation in the event of a crisis.
    • Systematize media monitoring activities in order to measure all the media-relations work.
    • Alternatively to coordinate external parties (eg.PR agencies) to accomplish this.
  • Support the Communications Director by assuming and leading diverse communications processes, including but not limited to:
    • Executing previously agreed communications activities.
    • Representing the communications department in internal and/or external meetings.
    • Promoting the adoption and implementation of both, HFHI’s Brand Strategy and the Regional Communications Strategy amongst the region, by working with National Offices and other AO departments as required.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree
Skills/Experience: 
  • 6 years related experience
  • Formal studies in communications (journalism, public relations, advertising) or related field
  • Professional text and content editing level in Spanish language
  • Oral and written fluency in English
  • Ability to write and edit compelling stories for different audiences
  • Proven ability and experience in working with media outlets
  • Proactive, with ability to grasp abstract problems, develop strategies, and propose concrete plans
  • Ability to put forward ideas and gain support from different constituencies
  • Skilled to work in multi-cultural and multi-discipline environments, and create positive relationships with others
  • Ability to manage communications initiatives with tight deadlines, while also leading others in the process
  • Experienced in managing vendors and outsourcing providers

Preferred:

  • Professional text and content editing level in English language
  • Experience working with both, national and international media
  • Experience on working in international environment
  • Knowledge of desk-publishing processes
  • Associated to a journalism professional college

Beneficial but not Required:

  • NGO-experience
  • Knowledge in graphic design and/or photography
