The Area Vice President, reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, is responsible for providing oversight and direction to Habitat For Humanity International (HFHI) programs in the Latin America/Caribbean Area.

The ideal candidate will work in a decentralized Area Office located in San Jose, Costa Rica, with 40% extensive travel within and outside the area.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Manage the HFHI Latin America/Caribbean Area:
    • develop and guide, in consultation with key stakeholders, the implementation of the Strategic Plan and key change components.
    • supervise HFHI Directors for the LAC area including Program, Resource and Development, Finance and Administration, TCIS, Communications, and Housing & Human Settlement.
    • facilitate and nurture relationships with National Organizations and key partners.
    • generate resources for HFHI's operations in the Area.
  • Develop and cultivate strategic partnerships and funding relationships with external organizations and individuals including international government agencies, corporations, foundations, etc.
  • Oversee and shepherd the work of the Terwilliger Center for Innovation in Shelter. Cultivate relationships with key financial institutions and private sector partners. Ensure cross-functional collaboration for successful execution.
  • Serve as a housing advocate in the region. Host and participate in key forums and conversations to promote policies, funding, and actions to promote decent shelter for all.
  • Together with other Area Vice Presidents and the HFHI Senior Leadership Team, participate in the development and refinement of global policy. Apply and, where necessary, contextualize, global policy to the Latin America/Caribbean Area.
  • Similarly, together with other Area Vice Presidents and the HFHI Senior Leadership Team, participate in developing, monitoring and up-dating the HFHI strategic plan. Implement the HFHI strategic plan in LAC area and develop operational plans in an appropriate manner for the area.
  • Pay regular visits to the National Organizations and/or attend events/meetings for the purpose of networking and identifying issues and concerns.
  • Facilitate and ensure cross-functional collaboration and interaction of area staff with other HFHI units and departments.
  • Provide leadership that supports the Christian based values of HFHI through active servant leadership, motivating Area Habitat staff members, serving partner families, and encouraging volunteers in following the mission and vision of HFHI.
  • Other related duties as assigned by supervisor.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree.
Skills/Experience: 
  • 5 years experience in the Latin America / Caribbean Area.
  • 10 years program management or international development experience required.
  • 5 years in management capacity, at Executive or Senior Management level.
  • Experience leading organizational change.
  • Course work on international issues and community development desirable.
  • Demonstrate an ability to manage a wide range of issues. Proven track record as a general manager at Executive/Senior Management level.
  • Outstanding oral and written communication.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Fluency in English and Spanish, both written and spoken.
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of social, political, cultural, and economic issues in the Latin America/Caribbean Area.
  • Willingness to travel at least 40%.
  • Demonstrate ability to work within and provide leadership to a team.
