The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking highly-qualified applicants for the position of Senior Associate Director to manage fundraising efforts, events, partnerships, and special initiatives in the San Francisco office. This full-time position will report to the City Director, San Francisco, in the Development and Outreach Department.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Manage relationships with key partners, advocates, and influencers to engage their networks, strengthen the Bay Area human rights community, and expand HRW’s impact;
  • Identify new philanthropic partnerships, as well as secure and successfully steward new donors to Human Rights Watch;
  • Create and produce compelling events, panel discussions, and speaker series’ that highlight HRW’s work and more deeply educate and engage the Bay Area community on human rights issues;
  • Work closely with the City Director to create excellent systems, data-driven strategies, and financial goals;
  • Manage communications with and create content for the San Francisco Committee and donor community including programmatic updates, social media, and targeted outreach;
  • Bring together leaders for select initiatives and help to manage special interest groups, advocacy efforts, and Committee activities;
  • Collaborate with the San Francisco team to identify potential philanthropic partners, investors, and leaders. Develop engagement strategies to deepen these relationships.
  • Represent the work of HRW to partners, investors, leaders, and the Bay Area community;
  • Track team budgets, metrics, reports, and expenses. Ensure resources are allocated appropriately;
  • Manage an Associate and interns and contribute to creating a dynamic team and engaging San Francisco staff;
  • Lead, motivate, and mentor direct-reports, including communicating clear expectations, setting performance objectives, providing regular and timely constructive feedback, ensuring balanced workload, providing guidance on professional growth, and monitoring staff well-being as it pertains to stress and resilience issues and self-care; 
  • Promote inclusive and positive work environment and model wellness practices and inclusive behavior that consistently adhere to HRW’s internal values; 
  • Work with staff to develop initiatives aimed at movement-building and expanding our partnership with diverse donors;
  • Lead engaging and productive meetings and conduct follow up; and
  • Perform other tasks, as required.
Educational Background: 
A bachelor’s degree in international relations, social sciences, communications/marketing, or related studies is required. An advanced degree in human rights, communications/marketing, or philanthropy is desirable.
Skills/Experience: 
  • A minimum of seven years of marketing/communications, fundraising, or event management experience and demonstrated success in managing large-scale events or projects are required.
  • Ability to effectively build significant relationships and engage with a variety of leaders, partners, committee members, and board members is required.
  • Demonstrated success in securing major gifts and stewarding long-term philanthropic donor relationships are required.
  • Creativity, initiative, follow-through and excellent organizational skills are required.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work collaboratively within HRW as well as with external partners are required.
  • Ability to multi-task effectively, including having good planning skills, and ability to work well under pressure are required.
  • Demonstrated commitment to human rights issues and the capacity to master and represent the mission and programs of HRW are required.
  • Commitment to working with staff and partners in a positive, collaborative, diverse, and inclusive work environment is required.  
  • Demonstrated awareness and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and orientations are required. 
  • Strong computer skills are required. Experience with donor databases and knowledge of social media are highly desirable.
