Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Programs will lead WCG’s portfolio of programs and projects, providing technical oversight and support to Programs team and ensuring the proper use of resources to deliver results. The Director of Programs may also take on direct management of specific, strategic projects. The Director of Programs is a critical leader in business development for WCG. While the Executive Director is the primary lead for new donor outreach, the Director of Programs is responsible for project design and ensuring the submission of quality, winning proposals. The Director of Programs is one of the key senior leaders of WCG, along with the Executive Director and Director of Finance and therefore is an important leader in the charting of strategy and direction for the organization, and ensuring that WCG is creating impact in a sustainable way, and livings its values.

Responsibilities include:
- Project portfolio oversight and specific project leadership – estimated 50%
- Provide strategic direction and technical and operational oversight for WCG’s project portfolio.
- Ensure impact is achieved and donor deliverables are met within the project timeframe and budget; oversee the submission of high-quality periodic reporting in line with donor requirements.
- Ensure sound financial management including programmatic budgeting, and proper cost allocation; ensure the effective use of donor resources and compliance with WCG and donor standards.
- Build capacity of programs team to effectively manage and carry forward implementation.
- Serve as liaison between donors, project partners and stakeholders.
- Lead program planning including annual work planning.
- Oversee the development and disseminating of lessons learned from projects.
- Identify opportunities for increased impact, improved efficiency and cost effectiveness.
- Business development – estimated 40%
- Partner with the Executive Director in the development and oversight of WCG’s overall new business strategy.
- Provide strategic direction and technical oversight for program and project design.
- Oversee the business development process and the submission of quality winning proposals to targeted donors.
- Oversee key external communications (public website, annual report, and other content/work products for targeted donors).
- Oversee WCG’s programmatic knowledge management function ensuring the capture of and access to key new business and program documents.
- Strategy and senior leadership of WCG – estimated 10%
- As a member of WCG’s senior leadership team help to chart overall strategy and direction; ensure responsible and optimal use of WCG’s resources; identify, attract, and nurture talent across WCG; build passion, commitment and alignment among internal and external stakeholders; drive change and make difficult decisions when needed; and model WCG’s values and foster WCG culture.
Competencies:
- Experience managing, implementing, and monitoring large complex projects with the full range of technical, field and administrative skills required for successful implementation of reproductive and sexual health programs.
- Familiarity with international health, development issues and the international donor community.
- Experience in designing complex projects in reproductive and sexual health.
- Experience preparing and managing quality, successful technical and financial proposals.
- Experience developing and managing budgets.
- Experience and strength in building and leading teams, and coaching and developing individual team members.

Supervisory Responsibility:
This position manages all employees of the department and is responsible for the performance management and hiring of employees within the department.
Education and Qualifications:
- At least 10 years demonstrated staff management and project oversight experience in international health context.
- Master’s degree in relevant field of study.
- Personal traits- resourcefulness in priority setting and strategizing solutions, ability to discern when to work independently or collaboratively, and where lines of authority exist; ability to discern when discretion is required or when transparency in a must; integrity, credibility, affability.
- Experience living and working in geography targeted by WCG.
- Professional proficiency in another language such as French, Portuguese or Spanish.
Travel:
Travel, both international and domestic is estimated to be up to 25%.
