Managing Director, Development

This job is no longer available

San Diego, CA, United States
Full-time
The Role
Teach For America – San Diego seeks a Managing Director, Development (MDD) to partner closely with a diverse, high-profile board and some of the most prominent philanthropists in our community to take our local fundraising work to the next level of excellence. The MDD reports directly to the Executive Director, collaborating with senior leadership, to set a bold vision and develop a short and long-term strategy to take our annual fundraising from $1M/year to $3.5M/year by 2023.
The MDD is responsible for developing a diverse and sustainable individual, corporate, and foundation investor base throughout San Diego County, and will manage at least one other development team member toward ambitious quarterly and annual goals. Along with the Executive Director, the MDD leads stewardship of key stakeholders to ensure that all donors have an opportunity to directly experience the way our teacher leaders and alumni are innovating education and transforming student lives.

The Team
San Diego is without doubt one of the best places to live that abounds with natural beauty, powerfully diverse communities, and cultural attractions for every taste. Our community is at the forefront of innovation, ranking among the very top of global cities when it comes to telecommunications, biomedical, defense, and clean technologies. San Diego also has a long and proud history of innovation in education. We have many examples at traditional district school, charter schools, and non-profit organizations where students from underserved communities are getting the kind of excellent education that permits them the opportunity to grow up to live out their own and their family’s dreams and aspirations. Yet, despite all the progress, our underserved students, on average, struggle to get access to an excellent education – 1/3 are expected to drop out of high school; only 1/10 are likely to have a college degree by the age of 25; and, especially disturbing in a place like San Diego, only 1/100 is likely to graduate with a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) degree.
The MDD will join a team of eight dedicated, talented, highly effective leaders who care deeply about supporting nearly 400 total teacher leaders and alumni who are working daily toward a vision of making San Diego a destination for innovation in education, where students in all communities have access to an excellent education. The team prioritizes collaboration, open communication, learning, and growing. Members of this team have regular opportunities to connect with some of the most inspiring educators in San Diego, which includes our current cohort of teachers that work with students from Pre-K through 12th grade.

About the Organization
There are more than 16 million children growing up in poverty in the U.S., and less than 10 percent of them will graduate from college. These statistics are not a reflection of our children’s potential; we know that children growing up in poverty can and do achieve at the highest levels. Rather, these statistics reflect the systemic lack of access and opportunity for children in low-income communities.

Teach For America (TFA) finds, develops, and supports an ever-expanding network of outstanding and diverse leaders committed to expanding opportunity for children in schools, school systems, and in every sector and field that shapes the context in which schools operate. Representing the diversity of America and sharing the experience of having taught successfully in our most challenging public schools, TFA corps members and alumni form a network of change agents inside and outside of education who are grounded in the tremendous potential of our most underserved children and connected to families and communities impacted by educational inequity.

Founded by Wendy Kopp in 1989, Teach For America has since expanded to 36 states and 53 regions, reaching more than 10 million students. Now 53,000 strong and growing each year, the TFA community is leading across all sectors, including as teachers, school and school system leaders, elected officials, policy and advocacy organizers, social entrepreneurs, and business and civic leaders. We support the individual and collective leadership of this network as they work hand-in-hand with students, families, and allies in the effort to realize educational equity and excellence for children across the nation.
