One of the primary missions of LLS is to conduct research leading to cures for blood cancers. To this end, LLS has funded approximately 4000 grants to academic institutions over the past 64 years. LLS currently maintains approximately 250 active grants at a cost of approximately $40 M annual and a long term commitment (over the life of these grants) of more than $175 M. LLS seeks an Executive Director for the LLS Grant program to provide strategic and administrative oversight for the research mission and evaluate the progress of current grants. The incumbent will have substantial oncology and project management experience and will work as a senior member of the Research Department to set the strategy and achieve Research goals.
- Provide strategic oversight of LLS grant research program including defining areas of new research and designing new research programs
- Keep current on progress in blood cancer and prepare summaries of new findings
- Evaluate progress of current research grants including site visits to large ($5M) grantees
- Participate in evaluation of new opportunities for the Therapy Acceleration Program
- Develop and maintain point of contact with blood cancer researchers
- Design and oversee LLS annual scientific meeting at the American Hematological Society
- Provide administrative oversight to ensure smooth operations of all academic research programs
- Work with Donor Development and Awareness group in LLS to translate scientific findings for public consumption and promote the field and campaign fundraising initiatives.
- Work with Med/Sci Committee (oversees Research programs) and Chairperson to set quarterly meeting objectives
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Experience Requirements:
- 10+ years of relevant scientific experience in academics or industry
- Experience with project and scientific staff management.
- Experience with translational research is highly valued
- Experience in the development of oncology drugs from preclinical to clinical programs is highly valued
Position Requirements:
- Familiarity with blood cancer research.
- Experience with basic laboratory research
- Experience with drug discovery and/or development.
- Experience in the oversight of a wide variety of timeline-driven projects.
- Must be proactive and willing to do a wide variety of scientific and administrative oversight.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills will be particularly important due to the collaborative nature of this job. Ability to work in a dynamic, unstructured environment.
- Ability to motivate, lead, and supervise the activities of others, develops realistic timelines, and be able to solve problems.
- Demonstrated ability and experience making presentations to various review boards including lay audience
