The Development & Communications Director is responsible for developing, organizing, promoting, implementing, evaluating, and expanding all philanthropic support for Channel One Inc. and for managing all components of the agency’s fundraising plans, including, but not limited to: annual giving, direct mail, sponsorships, planned giving, major individual and corporate gifts, and special events. This position is also responsible for the design, development, and implementation of the communications and public relations program and for building awareness of Channel One’s mission, programs, and achievements throughout its 14-county region.

The Development & Communications Director supervises the Development Projects Manager, Community Engagement Coordinator and Development and Communications Associate.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Develop and execute multi-year Development Strategic Plan, managing and directing all individual, corporate, foundation, special event, and food and fund- drive fundraising activity
  • Develop and monitor Development and Volunteer program budgets, managing specific departmental budget items, and reporting department activities
  • Create and manage written development/communication plan, including short and long-term fundraising goals and objectives and overall fundraising strategy
  • Work with Board members to identify, solicit and steward prospective community donor contacts
  • Participate in developing high-level gift request strategy
  • Explore and develop strategies for corporate and foundation funding opportunities and solicitations and cultivate relationships through meetings, facility tours, and general communication
  • Personally manage relationships and solicitation process for select major individual and corporate donor partners
  • Responsible for Channel One Planned Giving program
  • Develop new and ongoing partnerships with businesses and organizations to support Channel One and sponsored events
  • Manage donor information and acknowledgement system to ensure accurate record keeping and timely donor recognition, including on-line, credit card, and direct mail giving
  • Identify and approve all third party requests to name Channel One as their beneficiary or “sponsor” to ensure proper use and protection of corporate name and image within the community
  • Oversee management of Channel One web site, including social media presence
  • Serve as speaker, media spokesperson, and presenter to external audiences, as needed
  • Develop and implement communications and marketing strategy, including brand image and messaging
  • Ensure volunteer program is maximized as a cultivation and fundraising opportunity, while meeting operational objectives
  • Provide direct supervision, leadership, orientation, training and evaluation to development department
  • Coach, mentor and cultivate each staff and develop goals for each position that support Channel One’s mission and strategic plan
  • Other duties as assigned
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree plus fund development experience
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience in cultivating, soliciting and stewardship of donors
  • Demonstrated track record of securing gifts from individuals, corporations, and institutions
  • Strong skills in leadership, team-building, problem-solving, time management
  • Strong interpersonal/relationship building skills
  • Excellent verbal, public speaking, presentation, and written communication skills
  • Computer proficiency – Windows/MS Office
  • Willing and able to work evenings and weekends as necessary
  • Well-disciplined self-starter, able to manage multiple projects and achieve goals
  • Supervisory experience and volunteer management
  • Nonprofit human service experience a plus
