About the Role
EdLoC is looking for a Chief Impact Officer (CIO) to be responsible for EdLoC’s mission-driven investment strategy. This includes leading EdLoC’s signature program, The Boulder Fund – a multi-million-dollar initiative to support leaders of color as they innovate, develop, and implement wealth-building strategies to serve young people of color from low-income communities. The Boulder Fund allows EdLoC to provide resources to leaders of color poised to bulldoze the most deep-seated barriers that young people of color face every day. The CIO will be responsible for stewarding The Boulder Fund, evolving it, expanding it, and making it a nationally recognized initiative for entrepreneurs of color seeking to make an impact in their community.
The CIO will also lead new innovative initiatives that mimic the spirit of The Boulder Fund in more nuanced, targeted ways. In collaboration with the CEO, the CIO will work with funders, and explore opportunities to develop new ways to impact the advancement of communities of color, particularly those that sit at the intersection of social justice, economic prosperity, and racial equity.
The CIO will contribute to the advancement of EdLoC’s values and thought leadership through five key functions: 1) Innovation, leadership and management of The Boulder Fund, 2) Facilitation, development and launch of new initiatives to expand wealth-building opportunities, 3) Establishment and management of a best practice collaborative for leaders of color, 4) Development of a network of funders, stakeholders, and practitioners to inform EdLoC’s wealth building innovation strategy, and 5) Contribution to organizational leadership.
- Innovation, Leadership and Management of The Boulder Fund (30%)
- Execute on The Boulder Fund’s yearly investment strategy by allocating resources to the most promising and innovative leaders of color.
- Build a $15M endowment to ensure the long-term sustainability of The Boulder Fund.
- Find new ways of innovating The Boulder Fund’s investment strategy by seeking leaders of color in the most struggling communities.
- Ensure there is a clear return on investment on all Boulder Fund investments.
- Facilitation, Development and Launch of New Initiatives to Expand Wealth-Building Opportunities (30%)
- Elevate leaders of color doing work in poorly acknowledged, or outright ignored sectors that impact a community’s economic prosperity.
- Identify and mentor leaders of color in the beginning stages of business development and implementation by providing unique resources to strengthen their plans.
- Pilot replicable micro-investments that can evolve into larger more impactful wealth-building strategies in targeted communities around the country.
- Establishment and Management of a Best Practice Collaborative for Leaders of Color (20%)
- Facilitate the sharing of best practices among Boulder grantees and the EdLoC’s community at large.
- Serve as an incubation lab for young entrepreneurs entering the wealth building space.
- Build an archive of resources to facilitate new and innovative thinking without re-inventing the wheel.
- Communicate, advocate, and share information that highlights the work of leaders of color that are innovating in the wealth-building space.
- Development of a network of funders, stakeholders, and practitioners to inform EdLoC’s Wealth Building Innovation Strategy (10%)
- Collaborate with the foremost leaders in the wealth building sector, and those at the intersection of social justice, economic prosperity, and racial equality, to develop EdLoC’s agenda.
- Position EdLoC as the premier convener, thought leader and advocate for increasing access to wealth building opportunities for young people of color in low-income communities.
5. Contribution to Organizational Leadership (10%)
- Collaborate with the executive team to establish org-wide strategic plans, goals, and impact metrics.
- Guide goal-setting processes for EdLoC through peer coaching and sharing of best practices.
- Work with the Chief of Staff to create, maintain, and oversee systems and processes to ensure effective management of the daily operations of program staff and an organizational structure that supports the organization’s goals.
- Supervise, coach, and collaborate with program staff to ensure programmatic and team success, as well as to support the team’s ongoing professional development and growth.
- Develop and implement strategies that will maximize the synergies among Network team areas.
- Lead annual planning and management of budgets for Impact programs and projects.
Qualifications & Attributes
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Human Resources, Communications, or related field. Master’s degree strongly preferred.
- 10 -15 years of senior level experience across nonprofit, education, philanthropy, or grassroots organizations, overseeing HR, talent acquisition, professional development, or employee benefits.
- Track record of success in developing and executing a talent acquisition strategy, building career pipelines, and elevating leaders of color into senior level roles.
- Experience working with a variety of external players.
- Excellent problem solver and critical thinker, who can synthesize information, ask insightful questions, think on your feet and spot trends quickly.
- Strategic and creative visionary who can take a nebulous idea, translate it into a program design and lead a team to turn it into reality.
- Creative thinker, joyful collaborator, self-starter and detail-oriented communicator with a positive approach, can-do attitude and a sense of humor.
- Confidence in a variety of public-facing roles- from funders to state legislators to congressional staffers, to White house personnel to members of the US Senate.
- Experience with complex program management. From designing new initiatives to overseeing a spectrum of programs.
- Comfortable discussing topics in a variety of policy areas, including wealth building, social justice and racial equity.
- Experience developing multi-sector partnerships that shift political power either through social justice grantmaking, brokering or allocating government funding streams, social impact investment, or hybrids thereof; Interest in transforming philanthropy and leveraging financial resources to build community leadership and power.
- Committed to working with diverse communities and to finding shared goals amongst varying experiences and perspectives.
- Ability to identify and implement solutions independently in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment, and a track record of taking responsibility when faced with challenges.
- Willingness and ability to exceed the “typical” job expectations on specific occasions (i.e. working late hours and/or weekends when project deadlines, events, or travel require it).
- Capable of mobilizing partnerships across the political spectrum to advance EdLoC’s agenda
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus.
The CIO is a remote, full-time position. Fully functioning home office required. Travel expected 20% of the time.
Salary and Benefits
- Salary for this role falls between $160,000 and $200,000, commensurate with relevant experience and qualifications.
- Monthly stipends to support remote engagement.
