Under the supervision of the Chief Development Officer, the Major Gifts Office has the primary responsibility of raising philanthropic support for annual, planned giving and capital initiatives. This position strongly supports the Association’s overall Financial Development initiatives with a strong focus on annual and capital initiatives for the Chapel Hill, Durham and Chatham County YMCAs ensuring success in their philanthropic initiatives. The incumbent must successfully communicate the YMCA of the Triangle’s philanthropic story and will work closely in stewarding prospective and current donors. The incumbent works with the development team and other senior YMCA staff to develop and strengthen relationships that will lead to successful philanthropic initiatives for the YMCA of the Triangle Area.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Models relationship-building skills in all interactions. Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations. Maintains regular, clear, and concise communication within area of responsibility.
  • Raises philanthropic support to undergird the YMCA’s mission and Long Range Plan.
  • Solicits gifts of $10,000 and higher for annual giving and $50,000 and higher for capital, endowment and planned giving from current Y donors and prospects.
  • Assists with prospect identification and conduct simple donor research as needed.
  • Manages relationships for at least 150-200 potential donors and/or current supporters, meeting expectations to identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward these very important members of the Y community.
  • Participates in all aspects of the gift cycle:
    • Initiates contacts with potential leadership and major gift donors
    • Develops appropriate cultivation strategies for them, including working with volunteers
    • Moves potential donors in a timely fashion toward solicitation and closure
    • Makes solicitations
    • Maintains stewardship contacts with donors
  • Works collaboratively with YMCA senior staff and volunteers.
  • Offers prospect strategy and counsel to those who are managing or assisting in the management of prospects.
  • Recruits and trains diverse volunteer teams across multiple dimensions of diversity. Responsible for onboarding and developing them for success.
  • Cultivates major donors and enables them to understand how they can contribute to strengthening the Y’s mission.
  • Acts as a resource on matters ranging from identifying potential volunteer connections to knowing about meeting and event spaces in key locations.
  • Participates in the YMCA’s relationship/moves management tracking system to more effectively steward donors and motivate prospective supporters.
  • Serves as the point person for following up with assigned senior YMCA staff and volunteers on their prospects.
  • Recruits new philanthropic volunteers.
  • Assists in creating the Development Office’s long-range plan.
  • Participates and assists with planning, as needed, in campaign meetings, fundraising events and cultivation socials.
  • Manages small cultivation budget.
  • Develops and writes proposals and letters as needed, while collaborating with YMCA administrative support staff and grant writers on significant asks.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in related field and/or 5-7 years of experience in related field.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Knowledge of and experience with planned giving.
  • Proven track record of raising major gifts.
  • Ability to develop strong relationships with people and to motivate their participation in philanthropic efforts is critical.
  • High comfort level in asking for leadership gifts as well as positioning volunteers to ask for support.
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills, the ability to work in a positive manner with others and a historical perspective of the YMCA.
  • Outstanding time management skills and initiative, strong attention to detail and the ability to direct and motivate senior staff.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Multi-lingual desired but not required.

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Travel, including overnight stays, will be a necessary part of the job.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $48,500.00
