The Construction Supervisor leads Habitat for Humanity Portland/Metro East construction staff, future homebuyers, and individual/group/ regular volunteers in performing in-house construction activities, including site preparation, foundation systems, rough framing, window/door installation, weatherproofing, siding, interior and exterior painting, flooring installation, millwork installation, fence building and landscaping. This position directly supervises work teams on site.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Leads day-to-day construction activities, and supervises Assistant Construction Supervisor, AmeriCorps Crew Leads, volunteers and future homebuyers in performing their sweat equity tasks. Individual person must be mindful of the diverse abilities of Habitat volunteers and homebuyers and assign work that can be accomplished successfully. Providing a quality volunteer experience is a key element of Habitat’s mission. Habitat also has a corps of skilled regular volunteers, and the construction site supervisor will identify and encourage skilled volunteers who work regularly to lead other volunteers.
- Coordinates with the Director of Construction and the individual site staff to prioritize daily/weekly tasks to be accomplished by Habitat staff, homebuyers and volunteers.
- Participates in the development and updating of project schedules. Communicates issues of concern and potential schedule delays to the Director of Construction as they arise.
- Gains/maintains a thorough understanding of the permitted construction documents and all construction drawings provided. Reviews the construction details for each activity in advance with the Director of Construction. The Construction Supervisor is responsible for meeting Habitat’s Quality Assurance standards.
- Maintains quality assurance (QA) check sheets. Habitat strives to build safe, decent, affordable and sustainable homes. QA check sheets verify that work completed has been inspected prior to proceeding to the next phase/stage of construction. Check sheets require dual sign-off by the construction supervisor and the VP of Construction.
- Creates a positive, safe and productive on-site experience for all Habitat volunteers and homebuyers. The priority is to maintain a safe work environment throughout the workday. Construction teams at each site present daily safety orientations for all volunteers and families.
- Responsible for insuring that proper safety equipment and safe tools are in use. Faulty tools are to be removed from use upon discovery and the Director of Construction must be notified. The Director of Construction must be notified when first aid is administered. Responsible for maintaining a fully stocked First Aid kit, a Safety Binder, and a map to the nearest emergency facility.
- Participates in regular construction meetings, organization meetings and other required events.

Educational Background:
High school diploma or equivalent preferred
Skills/Experience:
- Min. 7 years total experience in residential construction – min. 5 of those years as a lead carpenter/construction supervisor and min. 2 of those years experience in residential new construction with an emphasis on tract/production of homes and/or apartments
- Proven ability to take a project from plans to a completed structure, including blueprint reading, preparing material take-offs and extensive knowledge of all phases of residential construction
- Working knowledge of the 2011 Oregon Residential Specialty Code
- Excellent math skills
- Ability to assess the capabilities of others and to teach basic construction techniques to unskilled homeowners and volunteers
- Strategic thinking with ability to adapt to changes
