The Executive Director provides overall operational leadership and directs day-to-day activities to achieve LowCountry Habitat for Humanity’s Vision and Mission. The Director works collaboratively with both the Board of Directors and the Staff to develop and execute plans for meeting annual goals and objectives. Responsibilities include strategic planning, staff management, financial ownership, fundraising, community and local-government relations, awareness-raising, and liaison to both the Board and Habitat for Humanity International.

Key Areas of Responsibility:
General Administration
- Recommends policies to the Board and/or assists the Board in the formulation of policies for the effective and economical operation of the Habitat organization; ensures implementation of and adherence to policies adopted by the Board. Has chief administrative responsibility for Habitat’s public accountability, maintenance of organization facilities, and regular reporting to various bodies. Carries chief staff responsibility to ensure that Habitat’s legal and fiduciary obligations are met.
Financial Management and Development
- Prepares organizational budgets related to physical, financial, and human resources, and is accountable for control of these resources once approved. Directs all financial operations of the organization, including oversight of Habitat’s mortgage portfolio. Participates in and provides stewardship for fundraising activities by writing letters, speaking in various forums, and stimulating the activities of others in direct fundraising.
Personnel
- Supervises and directs key staff in the performance of their duties, evaluates each staff member’s performance and provides supportive coaching and development as appropriate. Provides overall control and direction of Habitat’s personnel function, including active participation in or approval of personnel decisions to hire or fire.
Construction
- Develops and recommends construction plans to the Board of Directors; reports results against targets. Facilitates and oversees home Builds working in close collaboration with the Construction Manager who actively directs, on-site, paid personnel, volunteers and material usage.
Public Relations
- Evangelizes and promotes the Habitat Vision to local community organization through a combination of direct involvement – sometimes spontaneous - and through public relation programs, including personal contact, literature, and the media.
Board Relations
- Develops and maintains a strong working relationship with the habitat Board. Provides written, long, and short-range plans specific to Habitat programs and services, while keeping the Board well informed of Habitat topics in a timely manner. Administers an orientation and training program for newly elected Board Members.
Community Relations
- Acts to foster highly effective relationships with all community organizations including local businesses, religious groups, other not-for-profits and government bodies. Serves on appropriate community committees synergistic to the Habitat Mission.
Educational Background:
A Bachelor’s degree and at least five years of experience in not-for-profit management (prior Habitat experience a plus) or other relevant management experience,

- Organizes plans and time-manages to meet deadlines across multiple projects,
- Articulates the organization’s mission, values and goals clearly and persuasively in a variety of settings and to a variety of constituencies,
- Demonstrates the highest level of written and verbal communication skills,
- Establishes, fosters and maintains effective working relationships with the Board, staff, donors, volunteers, the public, local government and other community service agencies,
- Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner, gathers and analyzes information skillfully and effectively leads by displaying sound judgment, and
- Seeks new ideas, methods and technologies (CRM’s, Inventory Management SW, Communication tools) to advance Habitat’s goals.
