The Director of Medical Affairs develops and leads all national medical outreach, eligibility criteria, referral strategies, educational programs, research and medical outcomes for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and its chapters. The Director is responsible for leading national strategic initiatives, programs and policy initiatives to ensure clarity, consistency, brand integrity, and child focus in the organization’s medical eligibility efforts. The Director further develops and staffs a national Medical Advisory Council comprised of volunteer physicians, and establishes strategic partnerships with national health and patient support organizations.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Directs all medical eligibility and outreach initiatives for the national organization, providing advice to chapters and national senior leaders on issues of medical eligibility policy, intended service population, referral trends, changing healthcare environment and other related strategic issues.
- Evaluates referral and eligibility certification procedures; recommend and implement changes to remove obstacles and barriers, improve access and streamline work flows.
- Facilitates eligibility case review process and consult with chapter staff, referral sources and the national Medical Advisory Council on difficult cases as needed, act as a mediator when conflicts arise
- Develops training, tools and resources for staff, chapters and medical advisors.
- Builds a strong network of volunteer medical advisors throughout the country, maintaining regular communication on eligibility and referral initiatives.
- Serves as staff liaison to national Medical Advisory Council, engaging members in organizational policy and strategy discussions.
- Collaborates with other national leaders to develop national outreach strategies and ensure consistent messaging related to eligibility.
- Coordinates with IT department on designing, implementing and managing technology solutions for referrals and eligibility certification processes that comply with healthcare industry requirements.
- Oversees national research partnerships and reporting initiatives related to defining medical impact, potentially eligible children and eligibility metrics.
- Functions in a leadership role as a senior member of the Chapter Advancement team.
- Provides guidance on risk-management issues, travel safety, and policies and procedures for fulfilling wishes for medically fragile children with complicated and high-risk situations.
- Is on-call for consultation on emergency situations and medical evacuations that may occur.
Educational Background:
A Master’s degree in healthcare-related field, such as direct patient care, healthcare, administration or other related field is required. An NP, MD, DO or MHA is desirable.
Skills/Experience:
- Demonstrated skills and past experience in program and policy development and implementation in a healthcare setting, with a strong knowledge of trends in pediatric patient care and childhood diseases.
- Management, leadership and patient care experience in a hospital or clinical setting.
- Proven track record of effectively leading people, major projects and change initiatives.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to thrive in a team and relationship-oriented environment.
- Effectively engage and communicate with physicians, social workers, administrators, senior executives and families in crisis.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in relevant field is required.
