The Director of Individual and Leadership Giving (DILG) is responsible for managing HEBSV’s individual giving team (currently 4 full time staff) and programs throughout the East Bay and Silicon Valley, including but not limited to: major and planned giving; annual giving; online giving; and direct mail. The DILG’s primary focus is on increasing overall funding, stewarding high priority donors, and securing new strategic partnerships for HEBSV. The DILG will work closely with members of HEBSV’s Senior Management Team, Governance Board, and Foundation Board to identify, cultivate, and solicit new prospective partners.
Individual and Leadership Giving Program
- Oversee all individual giving programs and annual budget. Meet or exceed budget goals.
- Manage a portfolio of high net worth individuals, and apply a moves management approach to the portfolio, with a custom cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategy for each partnership. Target partners with annual giving capacity of $25K+. Promote and close complex gifts such as campaign, endowment, and planned gifts.
- Manage the CEO and CDO’s relationships with high-net worth individuals as appropriate, creating briefing memos, call scripts, and ghostwriting notes and emails to further the relationship between HEBSV and existing or potential partners.
- Guide the development of compelling proposals and oversee the development of creative presentations and reports for use with external audiences by the individual giving team. Coordinate benefits and recognition for individual partners.
- Assist with the vision, planning, and implementation of annual fundraisers (such as Cycle of Hope, Women’s Leadership and Executive Builds, etc.) and other HEBSV events (such as groundbreakings, dedications, tours, etc.) that cultivate and steward high priority partners.
- Manage HEBSV’s planned giving program and current vendor, Crescendo. Work with the Marketing Team and Crescendo to develop annual planned giving marketing strategies to increase participation in HEBSV’s Legacy Society. Set strategies and goals to grow pipeline of planned gifts.
Team Management
- Manage two Major Gifts Officers (MGOs) setting goals, metrics and timelines; coordinating the assignment and flow of accounts and prospects within portfolios; and helping to create custom strategies for each partner focused on renewals, upgrades and multi‐year commitments.
- Manage the Individual Giving Manager (IGM) setting goals, metrics and timelines; editing and approving all content for direct mail pieces and online giving campaigns; and overseeing the IGM’s management of the Raiser’s Edge database, Development Associate, and data entry volunteers.
- Work collaboratively with the Director of Corporate & Organizational Giving to cultivate individual gifts from corporate partner executives and to grow employee giving/matching gift programs.
- Work collaboratively with the Director of Marketing & Communications to coordinate messaging and develop content for direct mail, online campaigns, donor proposals and reports.
- Work collaboratively with the Director of Volunteer & Engagement Programs to identify key donor prospects and to grow donor participation in engagement programs.
Senior Management Team, Governance and Foundation Board
- Work with Senior Management Team, Governance Board, and Foundation Board members to identify and cultivate new prospective partners. Strategically engage leadership in peer-to-peer visits, solicitations, and closings.
- Attend quarterly meetings of the Foundation Board and assist with agenda preparation, meeting facilitation, and follow-up. Help recruit new members to the Foundation Board annually.
- Occasionally attend and present at Governance Board meetings when appropriate. Help recruit new board members annually.
General Activities
- Support the CDO in developing the annual strategic plan objectives and create annual goals for individual giving. Develop an annual budget and monthly cash flow for income and expenses.
- Provide accurate and timely activity and pipeline reports and revenue forecasts. Maintain accurate information in the donor database.
- Attend and assist with organizational events and speaking engagements on behalf of the HEBSV.
- Effectively manage HEBSV’s resources.
- Seven years paid nonprofit experience in individual donor development and major gift solicitation.
- Experience managing a portfolio of high net worth individual donors.
- Minimum of three years personnel management experience.
- Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communications skills with the ability to make dynamic group presentations.
- Strong planning skills, including the ability to anticipate tasks, set priorities, meet deadlines and function smoothly under strict deadlines and shifting priorities.
- High-level computer literacy skills. Experience with donor databases, ideally Raiser’s Edge.
- Strong team player who also works well independently.
- The capacity to develop and maintain positive and productive relationships with constituents and staff.
- Local knowledge of the Bay Area philanthropic community.
- Commitment to affordable housing and to HEBSV's mission.
- Full-time, flexible hours. Some weekday evenings and weekends required. Some travel required.
