Planned Parenthood of New York City is seeking a Vice President of Education & Training. This position is based at our Administrative Offices located at 26 Bleecker Street, New York, New York 10012.

Areas of Responsibility: 

FIRST YEAR’S PRIORITIES

During the first year of employment, the Vice President will be expected to:

  • Become thoroughly immersed in PPNYC – its history, mission, programs, people, structure and operations, finances, constituencies, organizational culture and values, and potential;
  • Develop and nurture solid working partnerships with PPNYC’s management team, the Education and Training team, other members of PPNYC’s staff and its partners in order to bring forth their best ideas and efforts and enhance overall departmental collaboration and effectiveness;
  • Work closely with the agency’s management team and the Education and Training team to assess the Education and Training department’s current operational plans and budget, as well as alignment with organizational capabilities to advance the mission; initiate new planning processes as needed; and
  • Become an effective and visible spokesperson for PPNYC, increasing awareness of the organization’s education work and visibility among its stakeholders, including potential donors.

 

ONGOING RESPONSIBILITIES

The Vice President will be expected to: 

  • Working with the Education and Training team, set the department’s overall direction and priorities and develop and implement program strategies and goals;
  • Manage the Education and Training department, including direct supervision of all senior staff; ensure that staff are adequately supported to effectively carry out their work and achieve departmental and agency goals;
  • Oversee programs that provide direct service to target populations as well as training and capacity building assistance to service providers.
  • Monitor budget and ensure funding obligations are met in an effective and efficient manner
  • Ensure strong internal communication among staff; work closely with the management team to ensure the flow of relevant information and encourage effective collaboration and coordination between and among teams;
  • Regularly evaluate performance; enhance opportunities across the organization for personal and professional leadership development; encourage diversity in hiring, promotion and intra-agency transfers;
  • Sustain and nurture a collaborative and equitable workplace culture that reflects PPNYC’s values; ensure open and clear channels of communication; employ transparent decision making;
  • Engage key community stakeholders in PPNYC advisory committees, including the Information and Education Committee to review and approve all educational materials developed and disseminated by the department. ;
  • Serve as an active member of the agency’s management team; regularly brief the team on the status of the department; participate in the development of agency policies, staff development initiatives and long-range planning;
  • Serve as a spokesperson for the agency in the media, public forums, and agency events as needed; Actively promote the agency’s expertise and voice;
  • Reinforce and strengthen relationships that the agency maintains with a broad array of organizations and individuals in order to facilitate sharing of knowledge and strategies for action and best practices; oversee the department’s participation in program research projects; and regularly pursue relationships with new partners and undertake collaborative projects when appropriate
  • Help ensure that the agency consistently utilizes social media, social networking and other emerging communications technologies and practices to help the agency reach diverse audiences, including volunteers and young people
Educational Background: 
A Bachelor's degree is a minimum requirement; a graduate or professional degree in Education, Public Health or other relevant field is desirable
Skills/Experience: 

We’re seeking candidates who have:

  • Strong passion for and demonstrated commitment to PPNYC’s mission and goals; substantial experience as an effective advocate for social justice is highly desirable;
  • A minimum of eight years of proven senior-level managerial, program development, problem solving, and financial experience gained ideally in the fields of health education and/or youth programs; experience gained in women’s reproductive health care and/or sexuality education is preferred;
  • Strong intellectual and strategic abilities combined with a well-informed understanding of current political, economic, social, and cultural issues;
  • A successful track record as a unifying team builder who inspires collaboration and functions decisively; capable of connecting with staff, both on an individual level and in groups;
  • Proven successful experience working in a variety of diverse contexts and communities with the ability to interact professionally and thoughtfully with a wide array of people; cross-cultural competence; a strong track record of working across the lines of gender, race, class, and culture;
  • Demonstrated expertise as a relationship builder with existing ties to a broad and diverse range of communities; strong interest in engaging diverse stakeholders and helping PPNYC strengthen and expand its relationships and networks; proven and successful track record creating effective partnerships and collaborations, with a reputation as a good strategic partner;
  • Experience as an inspirational public presence, with excellent oral and written communication skills; experience communicating through traditional and new media and an appreciation of their value for leveraging social justice is desirable;
  • Credibility and experience to connect PPNYC to a range of resources and opportunities outside the organization;
