Works through volunteers with community systems through multiple intervention strategies including public and private policy and environmental change, media/promotion, and programs and services to integrate cancer control (Prevention, Detection and Patient Support) at all levels of the community. Community Systems include: Community groups/organizations (boys and girls clubs, fraternal organizations, chambers of commerce, other employer represented groups, priority populations, churches, local hospitals, community health systems, The Harold Leever Regional Cancer Center, city/county government and government agencies, city/county school districts, colleges/universities, and worksites. This position is funded by a grant from the Hallden Trust and works in the Waterbury, CT area.
- Represent the American Cancer Society to local community health improvement initiatives (i.e. Healthy Communities, wellness and tobacco control initiatives, American Cancer Society programs, etc.).
- Manage the Hallden grant with the Connecticut Community Foundation, providing an annual action plan and budget, quarterly status report, and semi-annual budget report.
- Provide statistics to The Harold Leever Regional Cancer Center and Cancer Committees on ACS program utilization by patients on a quarterly basis.
- Institute and develop relationships with physician leaders of high-priority group practices, integrated health systems, health plans, and other community based-organizations. Provide regular communications and necessary follow-up with the constituent appropriate for the level of the relationship.
- Deliver key message points and health related contact to medical and health administration professionals.
- Work within primary care infrastructure--physicians, key administrative staff, nurses, managed care—to identify gaps in the resources offered and work within the system to determine potential solutions, and to determine need for physician volunteer involvement and execute as appropriate.
- Act as the Resource Center Manager at the Harold Leever Regional Cancer Center; ensure successful resource center operations.
- Gather local data for community assessments and community resource database, etc.
- Work with area American Cancer Society staff as necessary to provide expertise for local initiatives.
- Collaborate with Government Relations and Advocacy staff and income development staff to deliver cancer control initiatives and messages to community and build volunteer base for the American Cancer Society.
- Engage Relay for Life communities/volunteers/participants in year-round cancer control.
- Work with area American Cancer Society cancer control staff to develop and execute regional action plans based on community assessment data, community resources and the Society’s Program of Work that address prevention, detection, and patient support outcomes.
- Work with community systems to initiate public and private policy change (in collaboration with Government Relations staff and volunteers), promote and implement the Society’s guidelines, advocacy agenda, patient support and prevention/detection programs and services.
- Responsible for volunteer identification, recruitment, specialized training and management.
- Engage diverse populations and communities in cancer control initiatives.
- Work on special projects in collaboration with The Harold Leever Regional Cancer Center.
- Other duties as may be assigned from time to time.
- Two years of experience in cancer control or healthcare related field.
- Understanding of the American Cancer Society, including: its mission to improve the quality of life of cancer patients; the many patient support programs; prevention and detection guidelines and programs; advocacy issues; and commitment to diversity.
- Volunteer management for community health initiatives.
- Relationship management/sales experience.
- Knowledge or experience working with community groups or systems.
- Experience in community outreach and mobilization is desirable.
- Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks.
- Ability to work with limited supervision.
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office products, Lotus Notes, Databases, and the Internet.
- Ability to work cooperatively and in a team environment with peers and superiors.
