Project Director, Prevention of Early and Forced Marriage

Save the Children is seeking a Project Director/Chief of Party (COP) for an anticipated two-year USAID-funded Prevention of Early and Forced Marriage program in Niger.  This ambitious program focuses on significantly reducing the prevalence of early marriage in targeted areas of Niger. The Project Director and team will need to employ new and innovative approaches and will require close collaboration with communities, peer organizations, and government stakeholders.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Develop strategic plans, annual and quarterly work plans, and overall management of the program in line with USAID guidelines to achieve project objectives.
  • Ensure high quality technical leadership and oversight is in place for the program, including robust gender integration and an overall gender transformative approach to project implementation.
  • Lead team in collaboration with the Ministries of Health, Education, and Population, Women’s Promotion and Protection of Children and key USAID Implementing Partners (IP) working in USAID intervention zone.
  • Support the development of strong M&E mechanisms, program monitoring tools and efficient systems to ensure high quality implementation; allow for timely and accurate decision-making and course corrections when evidence acquired through the activity’s MEL mechanisms suggest the need for change.
  • Support a rigorous approach to collaboration, learning and adaptation driven by data that, in consultation with USAID, lead to refinements and adjustments to the activity’s technical approaches and annual work plans.
  • Ensure compliance with all USG regulations, procedures and Save the Children guidelines and relevant policies, such as safety and security, fraud prevention and safeguarding policies (e.g. Child Safeguarding Policy, Gender Equality Policy, Workplace Culture Policy).
  • Represent Save the Children with partners and key stakeholders, maintain positive relationships with USAID, local ministries, and the country office team.
  • Establish effective communication and coordination with personnel from the government in order to implement interventions.
  • Actively participate as a member of the Country Extended Senior Management Team (ESMT), contributing to country strategic plan.
  • Create and sustain a work environment of mutual respect where the project team strives to achieve excellence. This includes effective gender mainstreaming processes and establishing commitment to gender equality and social inclusion in the project workplace among staff.
  • Incorporate SC’s vision and values and full adherence to Code of Conduct principles;
  • Closely monitor security dynamics in the project areas and report to the Country Director on significant changes in the security context.
Educational Background: 
Master’s Degree in international development or related field.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum 8 years’ of professional experience designing, managing and implementing programs involving youth, gender, gender-based violence, child protection, social behavior change, and/or advocacy.
  • At least five years of senior program experience working and living in Niger.
  • In-depth knowledge of USAID approaches and regulations.
  • Prior experience as Project Director, Chief of Party or Deputy COP.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to lead and work effectively in team situations.
  • Creative problem solving skills with the ability to work effectively in resource-constrained environments.
  • Demonstrated commitment to gender equality and social inclusion values, evidenced through previous positions/programming
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and French.
